Title: PERMIT MAIL

1
PERMIT MAIL
Permit Mail is the most popular way to pay for
postage, especially for high volume mailings.
Instead of using pre-cancelled stamps or a
postage meter, the mailer prints postage
information in the upper right hand corner of the
mail-piece. This postage block is called a
Permit Imprint. Permit Imprints are a
convenient way to pay for bulk postage no buying
postage in advance or having to affix stamps.
When using Permit Mail, there are certain rules
and regulations you must adhere to.
2
PERMIT MAIL
You can use a Permit Imprint with many
types of mail. Determine the service that is
best for your mailing, obtain authorization to
use The Citadels permit number from the Director
of Postal Services, then design and imprint your
permit for First Class, Standard or Non-Profit
Mail. Permit mailings must contain at least 200
pieces, but higher volumes may be required for
mail at some rates. You cannot send out an
individual piece of mail with a permit indicia on
it. Individual pieces bearing an indicia must be
covered by a white label in order to be metered
and mailed.

  • When undertaking a large mailing of several
hundred pieces or more, it would be prudent to
check with the Mailpiece Design Analyst at Cross

  • Before your final draft goes to the printer, she
can give you valuable ideas about creating a
    correctly formatted mail piece.

Producing permit imprints may be made by
printing press, hand stamp, lithography,
mimeograph, or similar device. They must not be
typewritten or hand-drawn. All pieces in a
permit imprint mailing must be of identical
weight unless otherwise authorized by the USPS.
No International Mail can be sent with a
permit indicia. This mail must be separated from
your mailing. If indicia is printed on
International Mail, a white label must cover the
indicia in order for mail-piece to be metered.

In order to send mail with a Permit Imprint,
each user must fill out a Postage Statement
Postage Statement forms may be obtained at The
Citadel Post Office or on the USPS
website. Postage Statements must be submitted and
signed by each Department that intends on using
permit mail. All Departments using The Citadels
official permit indicia 779 must submit a
Postage Statement (in duplicate) filled out with
the departments name and/or account number to be
charged. Examples of these forms are below.

If you have not used the software in Admissions
and your mail-piece weighs less than 3 ounces,
your permit mail should have Presorted
imprinted on indicia if you use First Class
mail. A copy of your mail-piece must be sent to
the Postal Director along with a copy of the
mailing statement for approval. Individual
mail-pieces bearing an indicia must be covered by
a white label in order to be metered. This is a
quick overview of Permit Mail. For questions
or more information, contact The Citadel Post
Office at 953-6778 or go to the USPS.com website.
