Title: Pupil Assessment

1
Pupil Assessment
  • Day to day strategies to assess pupils learning

2
Pupil assessment
  • What is assessment?
  • Tests
  • SATs
  • What level are children working at in various
    subjects?
  • What have children learned?
  • What do children need to learn next?

3
  • If you want a plant to grow it is no good just
measuring it, you need to give it things that
    will make it grow.
  • Children are the same, measuring them is not
enough! They need to be given learning that will
    make them grow.

4
Purpose of Assessment
  • Assessment of learning
  • Any assessment which summarises where learners
are at a given point in time a snapshot of what
has been learned in terms of attainment and
    achievement
  • Assessment for learning
  • Any assessment activity which informs the next
steps to learning. Assessment for learning
depends on actually using the information gained.

5
Key factors that improve learning through
assessment
  • Providing effective feedback to children
  • Actively involving children in their own learning
  • Adjusting teaching to take into account the
    results of assessment
  • Recognising the influence that assessment has on
the motivation and self esteem of children, both
of which are crucial to learning
  • Considering the need for children to assess
themselves and to understand how to improve

6
What the research says
  • Impact on children
  • Are able to recognise their achievement
  • Work for themselves rather than for the teacher
  • More likely to express their learning needs
  • Children are more focused and behavior improves
  • Greater ownership of lesson as responsibility for
learning shifts from teacher to child
  • Automatically self-evaluative position

7
What the research says
  • Impact on teachers
  • Teachers focus more on learning intention than
    activity
  • Sharpens understanding of learning intentions
  • More critical and evaluative of tasks
  • Reinforces vocabulary
  • Makes plenary more engaging
  • Allows marking to be more defined

8
Example
  • Activity Survey of pets in our homes
  • Learning Intention To record information on a
    graph or chart
  • Success Criteria
  • Decide whether to use a graph or chart
  • Label both axes
  • Choose an appropriate scale
  • Use a sharp pencil and ruler for accuracy
  • Make bars the same width on a bar chart
  • Give the graph or chart a title

9
Separate the Activity and Learning Intention
  • To list what a pet needs
  • To be able to make a list
  • To ask questions about how a tape recorder works
  • To asks questions about why things happen and how
    things work
  • To know about Remembrance Day
  • To make connections between symbols and things
    which happened in the past
  • To know the names of the parts of a plant
  • To know the names of the parts of a plant

10
Day to Day Assessment
  • Questioning
  • Observing
  • Discussing
  • Analysing
  • Checking Understanding
