• Phase I 704 hrs (88 training days) at Sheppard
• 688 Med Lab Specific Training Hrs 16 hrs
  Medical Readiness Training

How is AF MLT Training Developed?

• Utilization Training Workshop (UTW)
• CFM chairs/schoolhouse hosts UTW to update
  CFETP/STS
• Usually held every 3-4 years
• Uses OSR and GAS data along w/ clinical SME
  opinions
• STS updates drive curriculum changes
• 12-18 Months of writing (SME, TDE, SPM, TM, TRR
  Chief)
• 1 year of validation (Podium Instructors/Students
  from 3 full classes)
• 1 year of teaching approved updated curriculum
• Currently Voluntary moratorium on UTW until
  METC curriculum issues are put to bed
• ( Podium Instructor w/ CS/IS guidance)

• Not National Committee on Clinical Laboratory
  Standards (NCCLS)
• NCCLS is now Clinical Laboratory Standards

Why NAACLS Accreditation?

• Meets CLIA 88 requirement for MLT programs to be
  accredited
• Graduates of NAACLS accredited 50 week Military
  MLT schools
• Can perform high complexity testing
• Can sit for national registry as MLT
• Civilian Institution considered Gold Standard
  for Med Lab Training (MLT/MT)
• Like CAP but for MLT Education Training
  programs
• NAACLS Accreditation Requirements
• 1 year self study AF MLT program completed Jan
  07-Jan 08
• On-Site Visit AF MLT program inspected April
  21-22, 2008
• 1st ever AF Zero Deficiency Inspection
• NAACLS Board voted unanimous full 7 yr

This recommendation also co-locates all
(except Aerospace Medicine) medical basic and
specialty enlisted training at Fort Sam Houston,
TX, with the potential of transitioning to a
joint training effort. This will result in
reduced infrastructure and excess system
capacity, while capitalizing on the synergy of
the co-location of similar training conducted by
each of the three Services. In addition, the
development of a joint training center will
result in standardized training for medical
enlisted specialties enhancing interoperability
and joint deployability. 2005 Defense
