Title:
1Where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also.
--Matthew 621
2Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and
gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something
to drink? And when was it that we saw you a
stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you
clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or
in prison and visited you? And the king will
answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did
it to one of the least of these who are members
of my family, you did it to me.
3Its What One Can Do
4- The World Bank estimates it would cost an
additional - 50-75 billion a year
- to achieve the Millennium
Development Goals by 2015
5 but wait
6- There are 300 million people in
the U.S. today - Even at 75 billion a year
- Thats only 250 a person
7- For a family of four, thats 1,000.
- Thats still a lot of money. I mean, have you
seen the price of gas? - And college tuition?
- And what about my heating bill this winter?
8- Then again, this is the
- Millennium Development Goals
- Ending extreme poverty
- Universal primary education
- Stopping mothers and children from
dying - Pretty cool stuff
9- And, come on
not everything we spend money on is that
important. - I mean, this is about saving 30,000 childrens
lives a day. - Maybe we could cut back just a little?
10 11- Last year, Americans spent
- 1.4 billion on computer games.
210 billion on residential remodeling
2.5 billion for garage remodeling
22.8 billion renting
and buying DVDs
1.1 billion on downloadable music
47.3 billion on kitchen renovations
12- Â 12.4 billion on cosmetic procedures
Including
455,489 Liposuctions
364,610 breast augmentations
200,924 nose jobs
169,314 tummy tucks
3,294,782 botox injections
1,566,909 laser hair removals
1,023,931 microdermabrasions
556,172 chemical peels
13- 4 billion a year would save
500,000 womens lives
in childbirth
We spend 6.1 billion on tortilla chips, tostadas
and taco shells
6.4 billion on skin care products
9.8 billion on bottled water
9 billion on gourmet coffee
14- 2 billion a year would bring
100 million farming families out of poverty
through low-cost water
technologies
We spend 24.3 billion a year on golf equipment
6.9 billion on magazines
9.4 billion at the movies
6.43 billion in nail salons
15For 55 million, people in Burkina Faso
We spend almost three times that --
160 million -- on medical
insurance
- --14 million in one of the worlds poorest
countries
for our pets
would get clean water and sanitation
16It would take 12 billion to fully fund The
Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (the
top organization for its purpose in the world)
1.4 billion to treat male sexual function
disorders
- We spend 15 billion a year on chocolate.
50 billion treating low back pain
And well less than 1 billion on the Global
Fund
17Universal primary education would cost10
billion a year
- We spend twice that annually on ice cream
More than 5 times that on lottery tickets
And who knows how much on Kraft Macaroni
and Cheese?
More than 14 times that on fast food.
10 times that having taxes prepared.
18And thats not all
46.8 billion trying to diet
668 million on self-help books
55 billion on gift cards.
Thats 337 per household
7 billion on weight loss centers
30 billion on pizza
33 billion on landscape services
1.9 billion on running shoes
16.5 billion in candy 24 pounds/60 per
person
19A grande latte at Starbucks costs 3.65
- Have one every morning and thats about 1,000 a
year.
Thats 200 bednets to save children from dying
from malaria
Its that easy!
20It would take 0.7 of rich nations GNP to
meet the MDGs
Its not a lot of money.
- More than 70 dioceses and countless
congregations and individuals have pledged 0.7
of their income to MDG ministries.
If you make 50,000/year, its only 350.
21We know that your giving wont
solve everything.
- Systems need to change.
- Trade needs to be just.
- Nations including ours -- need to keep their
promises. - Corporations must do their share.
- And we need to use our voices to help
these things happen.
22But giving is important
- Because the money is
desperately needed. - Because when we give, we
speak with authority to our
leaders. - Because our relationship with wealth is our
greatest spiritual challenge. - But most of all
-
23Its important because Christ says we
meet and serve him in the poorest of
the poor.
Its important not because we should but because
we can. Because our greatness comes from seeking
and serving Christ. Because when we
give our lives away ...
Its important because Christ says where our
treasure is, our heart will be also
We are rich.
