  • Winter 2004
  • Edward T. Rangel

3
Not An Object For Worship
  • Cross does not save, does not make one more holy,
    does not remove sins.
  • Cross is not to be prayed to or carried around as
    a lucky religious relic.
  • The sign of the cross is of non-effect.

4
Not An Object For Worship
  • Ex 2023 You shall not make other gods besides
Me gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not
    make for yourselves.
  • Ex 3417 You shall make for yourself no molten
    gods.
  • Deut 57 You shall have no other gods before
    Me.

5
  • Isa 4413-17 Another shapes wood, he extends a
measuring line he outlines it with red chalk. He
works it with planes, and outlines it with a
compass, and makes it like the form of a man,
like the beauty of man, so that it may sit in a
house. 14 Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and
takes a cypress or an oak, and raises it for
himself among the trees of the forest. He plants
a fir, and the rain makes it grow. 15 Then it
becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes
one of them and warms himself he also makes a
fire to bake bread. He also makes a god and
worships it he makes it a graven image, and
falls down before it. 16 Half of it he burns in
the fire over this half he eats meat as he
roasts a roast, and is satisfied. He also warms
himself and says, "Aha! I am warm, I have seen
the fire." 17 But the rest of it he makes into a
god, his graven image. He falls down before it
and worships he also prays to it and says,
"Deliver me, for thou art my god.

Cross Is A Symbol (Reminder) Of
  • Suffering.
  • Salvation.
  • But not to be worshipped.
  • Come to the cross of Christ-Accept the
salvation that was wrought by the Lord on the
    cross.
  • Analyze what Coming to the cross means.

Jesus Is All The World To Me 204
  • 1. Jesus is all the world to me, my life, my joy,
my all he is my strength from day to day,
without him I would fall. When I am sad, to him I
go, no other one can cheer me so when I am sad,
he makes me glad, he's my friend.

8
Jesus Is All The World To Me 204
  • 2. Jesus is all the world to me, my friend in
trials sore I go to him for blessings, and he
gives them o'er and o'er. He sends the sunshine
and the rain, he sends the harvest's golden
grain sunshine and rain, harvest of grain, he's
    my friend.

9
Jesus Is All The World To Me 204
  • 3. Jesus is all the world to me, and true to him
I'll be O how could I this friend deny, when
he's so true to me? Following him I know I'm
right, he watches o'er me day and night
following him by day and night, he's my friend.

10
Jesus Is All The World To Me 204
  • 4. Jesus is all the world to me, I want no better
friend I trust him now, I'll trust him when
life's fleeting days shall end. Beautiful life
with such a friend, beautiful life that has no
end eternal life, eternal joy, he's my friend.

11
Cross Represents Death
  • Cross was a place where criminals were put to
    death.
  • Jesus was in the middle of two criminals (Luke
    2333).
  • The most lowly way of being put to death.
  • Very long and painful death.
  • Usually suffocated.
  • Bled to death.

12
Foreshadow Of The Crucifixion
  • Fall of man and nakedness (Genesis 310-11, 21).
  • God made them garments of fur to cover their
shame, because of sin. Innocent blood to cover
    mans sins.
  • Later on sacrifices instituted-more innocent
blood for mans sins (Hebrews 51).

13
Foreshadow Of The Crucifixion
  • Christ was the ultimate and perfect sacrifice,
killed on the cross of criminals.
  • Heb 923-28 Therefore it was necessary for the
copies of the things in the heavens to be
cleansed with these, but the heavenly things
themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24
For Christ did not enter a holy place made with
hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into
heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of
God for us 25 nor was it that He should offer
Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy
place year by year with blood not his own.

14
Foreshadow Of The Crucifixion
  • 26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer
often since the foundation of the world but now
once at the consummation of the ages He has been
manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of
Himself. 27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for
men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28
so Christ also, having been offered once to bear
the sins of many, shall appear a second time for
salvation without reference to sin, to those who
    eagerly await Him.

15
Foreshadow Of The Crucifixion
  • Foreshadowed in the desert when Moses lifted up
    the bronze serpent (Numbers 218-9).
  • Jesus spoke about this prophecy.
  • John 314-15 "And as Moses lifted up the
serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son
of Man be lifted up 15 that whoever believes may
    in Him have eternal life.

16
Foreshadow Of The Crucifixion
  • At the cross there must have been the death of an
innocent man so that we could obtain salvation.
  • Song 119 Rock Of Ages

17
Rock Of Ages
  • 1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself
in thee let the water and the blood, from thy
wounded side which flowed, be of sin the double
cure save from wrath and make me pure.

18
Rock Of Ages
  • 2. Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy
law's commands could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow, all for sin could
not atone thou must save, and thou alone.

19
Rock Of Ages
  • 3. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the
cross I cling naked, come to thee for dress
helpless, look to thee for grace foul, I to the
fountain fly wash me, Savior, or I die.

20
Rock Of Ages
  • 4. While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine
eyes shall close in death, when I soar to worlds
unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of
Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.

21
The Loneliness Of The Cross
  • Christ was crucified between two criminals.
  • They were dying for their own reasons.
  • Criminals.
  • Christ was innocent.
  • Christ was dying for the sins of all mankind.
  • No one could die for him (Father if it is
possible let this cup pass from me Matthew
    2629).
  • Death is a journey we all must make alone.
  • Even His disciples abandoned Him (Matthew
    2653-56).

22
Night, With Ebon Pinion
  • 1.Night, with ebon pinion, Brooded o'er the
valeAll around was silent, Save the
night-wind's wail,When Christ the man of
sorrows,In tears and sweat as blood,Prostrate
in the garden, Raised his voice to God.

23
Night, With Ebon Pinion
  • 2.Smitten for offenses Which were not his
own,He, for our transgressionsHad to weep
alone,No friend with words to comfort,Nor hand
to help was there,When the meek and lowlyHumbly
    bowed in pray'r.

24
Night, With Ebon Pinion
  • 3.Abba, Father, Abba,If indeed it may,Let this
cup of anguishPass from me, I prayYet, if it
must be suffer'd,By me, Thine only Son,Abba,
Father, Abba,Let Thy will be done.

25
Significance Of The Cross
  • Not an object of worship.
  • At the cross Christ (Matt. 26)
  • Suffered and died for all.
  • Shed His blood to die for all and to purchase His
    church. (Eph. 525 Rev, 15 1 Cor. 153 2 Cor.
    514-15)
  • Fulfilled the law of Moses (Jno. 1930 Matt.
    518).

26
Significance Of The Cross
  • At the cross we
  • Come in humble obedience as an answer to the
    gospel call.
  • Paul on the way to Damascus (Acts 9).
  • Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8).
  • Jailer and his household (Acts 16)

27
Significance Of The Cross
  • At the cross on is humbled, completely.
  • Without humility one cannot obtain salvation.
    Godly sorrow.
  • When one is humbled he is now ready to recognize
his sins and is willing to confess them so that
    the Master will forgive them.
  • One recognizes all their wrongs and takes them to
the feet of the Master for salvation.

28
1 How Great Thou Art O Lord my God, when I in
awesome wonderConsider all the works Thy hands
have made,I see the stars, I hear the mighty
thunderThy pow'r throu' out the universe
displayed.
29
2 Then sings my soul, my Savior God to TheeHow
great Thou art, how great Thou Art!Then sings my
soul, my Savior God to TheeHow great Thou art,
how great Thou Art!
30
3 When thro' the woods, and forest glades I
wanderAnd hear the birds sing sweetly in the
trees,When I look down from lofty mountain
grandeur,And hear the brook and feel the gentle
breeze. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to
TheeHow great Thou art, how great Thou
Art!Then sings my soul, my Savior God to
TheeHow great Thou art, how great Thou Art!
31
4 And when I think that God His, His Son not
sparing,Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it
in.That on that cross my burden gladly
bearing,He bled and died to take away my sin.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to TheeHow
great Thou art, how great Thou Art!Then sings my
soul, my Savior God to TheeHow great Thou art,
how great Thou Art!
32
5 When Christ shall come with shout of
acclamationAnd take me home, what joy shall fill
my heart! Then I shall bow with humble
adoration,And there proclaim, my God, how great
Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to
TheeHow great Thou art, how great Thou
Art!Then sings my soul, my Savior God to
TheeHow great Thou art, how great Thou Art!
33
At The Cross Salvation Is Obtained!
  • Precious blood of Christ was shed for you and I.
  • One obeys the gospel and fulfills all the terms
    and conditions of pardon.
  • Acts 2.

Victory in Jesus229Words and Music by Eugene.
M. Bartlett I heard an old, old story, How a
Saviour came from glory,How He gave His life on
Calvary To save a wretch like meI heard about
His groaning, Of His precious blood's
atoning,Then I repented of my sins And won the
victory.
35
O victory in Jesus, My Saviour, forever, He
sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is
due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the
cleansing flood.
36
I heard about His healing, Of His cleansing pow'r
revealing,How He made the lame to walk again And
caused the blind to seeAnd then I cried "Dear
Jesus, Come and heal my broken spirit,"And
somehow Jesus came and bro't To me the victory.
37
O victory in Jesus, My Saviour, forever, He
sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is
due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the
cleansing flood.
38
I heard about a mansion He has built for me in
glory,And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal seaAbout the angels singing,
And the old, redemption story,And some sweet day
I'll sing up there The song of victory.O
victory in Jesus, My Saviour, forever, He sought
me and bought me With His redeeming blood He
loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due
Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the
cleansing flood.
39
At The Cross ALL Sins Are Forgiven
  • There is not one sin that cannot be forgiven by
    God.
  • Lying, cheating, abortion, murder, drunkenness,
    etc.
  • 1 Cor 68-11 Or do you not know that the
unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?
Do not be deceived neither fornicators, nor
idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor
homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous,
nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall
inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some
of you but you were washed, but you were
sanctified, but you were justified in the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our
    God.

40
Conclusion
  • My friend, dont be arrogant to think that there
is no salvation and forgiveness for you. There
is, it is just a matter of you coming to the
    cross!
