How Did We Get Here?

• Public Involvement - 2004 Downtown Parking Study
  (Desman)
• Evaluated existing supply, use, and operations
  via study and field surveys
• Held 3 days of intensive focus group sessions
  with stakeholders in each parking district
• Followed up with meetings, interviews, and data
  clarifications to get to findings
• Several follow-up meetings with area merchants -
  especially in Northshore
• Ongoing communications with City Council members,
  residents, and merchants
• Findings
• Parking should be supplied, managed, and
  operated comprehensively, as an integral part of
  city infrastructure supporting residents,
  merchants, visitors, etc.
• On-street parking is most valuable space that
  should be made available for high-turnover uses.
• Longer-term parking should be moved to surface or
  structured lots.
• New facilities should complement the surrounding
  community.
• Parking system should be economically
  self-sufficient
