The Etruscans brought knowledge of engineering
and architecture to the Latin people of Rome.
They contributed the arch and the vault to Roman
building. The Etruscans also first introduced the
idea of gladiatorial combat for entertainment,
and the study of animals to predict future
events.. The Greeks contributed their alphabet (
the basis of the Latin alphabet), architecture,
especially the column and the dome, many
religious and mythological concepts, and
cultural, scholarly and artistic talent.

The Republic 509 BC - 46 BC
The Roman Republic was formed when the monarchy
was overthrown.
In the Republic a senate of patricians (nobles)
appointed two consuls to rule Rome for one year.
In the early Roman Republic only patricians could
serve in the senate.
As time went by, however, the plebeians who were
usually farmers and laborers, the common
people, began to gain power and eventually
representation in the government.
