History 1
  • After the Roman Empire fell, Spain was ruled by
    first, the Visigoths.
  • Next, Spain was ruled by, the Muslim Moors who
    then conquered North Africa.
  • Queen Isabella the 1st , then married Fernando
    the 2nd , of Aragon, in 1469, which united their
    kingdoms.
  • In the 16th Century, Spain became one of the most
    powerful empires.

  • One of Spains famous rulers was Phillip the 2nd,
    he lived, 1556 through 1598.
  • In the 18th Century, Spain lost territory and
    influence. Beginning with the War of Spanish
    Succession, (1701 through 1714.)
  • In 1850 Spain lost American, Philippines, and
    Cuban territories.

  • Futbol (Soccer) is the most popular sport.
  • Bull Fighting (Corrida de Toros) a popular
    attraction, considered a art not a sport
  • Only larger schools can support sports such as
    soccer (Futbol), tennis, basketball, swimming
    etc. So most people go to private clubs.

  • Spain is mostly Roman Catholics. 94 are baptized
    members.
  • Spains freedom of religion was granted in the
    1970s.

  • Parliamentary monarchy
  • King Juan Carlos 1st is chief of state.
  • But the Prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez
    Zapatero, is head of government.
  • The legislature consists of a 259 seat Senate and
    a 300 seat Congress of Deputies.

  • Spain occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula,
    covering 194,897 sq. mi.
  • Its nearly as large as Utah and Nevada combined.
  • Much of Spain is high plateaus surrounded by low
    coastal plains.
  • The Pyrenees Mountains are the largest mountains
    in the north.
  • The Ebor river is the longest river in this
    country.
