JOURNEY

• Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) was a
  Portuguese royal prince, soldier, and patron of
  explorers. Henry sent many sailing expeditions
  down Africa's west coast, but did not go on them
  himself. Thanks to Prince Henry's patronage,
  Portuguese ships sailed to the Madeira Islands,
  and eventually throughout the far east.

CHILDHOOD

• Born March 4, 1394 and was a prince of the
  Portuguese House of Aviz and an important figure
  in the early days of the Portuguese Empire. He is
  known in English as Prince Henry the Navigator or
  the Seafarer.

  important role in discovering the New World

• According to legend, beyond this point in an area
  known as the "Green Sea of Darkness," the sun was
  so close to the Earth that a persons skin would
  burn black, the sea boiled, ships caught on fire,
  and monsters hid waiting to smash the ships and
  eat the sailors. It took fourteen voyages over a
  period of 12 years until a ship finally reached
  the equator.

• Despite the creation of the caravel and the
  knowledge shared at his school for sailors,
  Prince Henry had a great deal of difficulty
  persuading his captains to sail beyond Cape
  Bojodor off the west coast of Africa.
