VIDEO HISTORY QUIZ!

The biggest distinction between the old and new
Rome was that New Rome was very much a Christian
city and its empire the realm of Christ on earth.
Byzantines saw themselves as subjects of Christ
Pantokrator, ruler of all, and the emperor who
was his representative on earth. Coins bore the
image of Christ Pantokrator wearing the imperial
diadem on the obverse and the emperor holding a
cross on the reverse. Psalms to Christ the
Conqueror were sung in military parades. Next to
the emperors throne was a second throne with a
copy of the Gospels as a reminder of who the real
ruler was.
