IMPROVE K-12 PERFORMANCE
  • Began in earnest in 1988/89 timeframe
  • Emphasis was on middle school and higher
  • Engineering took the lead in writing and winning
    3.5M/5yr NSF Grant (CRCM)
  • Recruited a retired educator/administrator as
    director a scientist as associate (both knew
    school system and education methods)
  • Used engineering faculty and students tutors and
    resource persons

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR YEARS 13-16
  • Driven by desire to broaden the pool from which
    engineering students might come
  • Combined both in-school and after-school
    activities (clubs, science fairs, museums and
    science centers, etc.)
  • Further funding through engineering coalitions
    program (academic year, summer bridge programs)
  • Open house and on campus activities on regular
    basis

INVOLVED BOTH EDUCATION AND ENGINEERING FACULTY
  • Employing the MSU Center for Excellence in Math
    and Science Education (CEMSE)
  • Win-Win Instructional strategies from education
    faculty thinking processes for problem solving
    from engineering faculty
  • Semi-annual Faculty Institutes serve as
    mechanisms for cross-fertilization
  • Sharing of personnel in summer activities

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS
  • Reduce language barriers
  • Instill in pre-college teachers the awareness of
    the potential to turn students off to math and
    science (lecture in methods courses)
  • Get engineers familiar with Core Learning Goals
    in exchange for application ideas
  • Influenced the installation of a required
    minimum 90 hour pd program for in-service teachers
