  • Certified Diabetes Outpatient Educator (CDOE)
    population
  • 174 educators
  • Only 1 are minorities
  • 1 African American
  • 1 Hispanic American

  • 60,000 People Diagnosed with Diabetes in Rhode
    Island
  • 2,291 Black Diabetics
  • 5,908 Hispanic Diabetics
  • 2006 RI BRFSS

OBJECTIVES
  • Address disparities in receipt of clinical
  • preventive diabetes services
  • Increase the number of minority health
  • professionals in Rhode Island
  • trained as Certified Diabetes
  • Outpatient Educators
  • (CDOE)

METHOD
  • Minority Recruitment Task Force was formed by
    the Executive Board of the DOE Program
  • Members included CDOE Dietitians, CDOE Nurses,
    CDOE Pharmacists and Members of the Diabetes
    Information Referral and Education Specialists
    Program (DIRES)

  • A detailed plan to introduce and promote
  • the DOE program to minority
  • health professionals
  • was developed

RESULTS
  • 13 minority professionals were recruited
  • 33 of the 2007 CDOE Class
  • 2 Nigerian, 1 Liberian, 3 African American, 1
    Cambodian, 1 Portuguese and 5 Hispanic
    professionals

CONCLUSION
  • Development of a task force committee is
    beneficial in recruiting professional healthcare
    minorities
  • A recruitment event providing education,
    information, and resources is successful in
    increasing the number of minority CDOEs.

  • Enhance and improve communication with
    professional minority groups
  • Maintain existing professional relationships with
    area colleges, hospitals and community centers
