Not the Traditions of Men

• We must not become captivated by the traditions
  of men (Col. 28).
• Traditions of men can invalidate the word of God
  (Mat. 151-6).

• Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus
  from Jerusalem, saying, 2 "Why do Your disciples
  transgress the tradition of the elders? For they
  do not wash their hands when they eat bread." 3
  And He answered and said to them, "And why do you
  yourselves transgress the commandment of God for
  the sake of your tradition?

  been done that way (traditional) is not walking
  by faith!

Not the creeds of men

• We must also beware of the dangers of creeds.

• Creeds of men quickly become the basis of
  authority rather than Gods word
  (2 Tim. 316-17).

  uninspired) inevitably add to the word of God
  (Rev. 2218-19).

• The sayings of men like Aristotle and Benjamin
  Franklin?
• Or the teaching of Jesus and His apostles?

• Many preachers depend on the quotations of famous
  men instead of book, chapter, and verse of the
  Bible to persuade people to accept their message!

• Though moved by the writings of men, only the
  preaching of Gods word will generate true,
  saving faith (Rom. 1017).

  Entertainment.

• 2 Preach the word be ready in season and out of
  season reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great
  patience and instruction. 3 For the time will
  come when they will not endure sound doctrine
  but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will
  accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance
  to their own desires 4 and will turn away their
  ears from the truth, and will turn aside to
  myths.

Not entertainment

• Instead of desiring truth, people want preachers
  that will merely make them laugh or feel good.
• Preachers that reprove and rebuke with the
  Word are rejected for negative preaching.

• Congregations that receive a steady diet of
  entertainment with minimal emphasis on the
  Scriptures will not be strong in their faith!

• Attempts to draw the lost to God through
  entertainment will not result in true conversions
  to Jesus Christ!

• Not by entertainment, but by
  hearing Gods word will people be
  saved, grow spiritually,
  and be faithful until the
  end (Rom. 1017 cf. 1 Pet. 22 Acts 2032 2
  Pet. 318 Phil. 127).

• Much discretion and wisdom must be used in using
  illustrations!

Modern Day Parables?

• To justify the use of illustrations, preachers
  often point to the example of Jesus who, at
  times, taught in parables in His ministry (e.g.,
  Mat. 13 cf. 1 Pet. 221).

  illustrations are not!
