  • Although Matthew gives us no details of the move
to Capernaum we learn that Jesus had been
rejected by His hometown Matthew will give us
the reason He moved His headquarters from
    Nazareth to Capernaum.

Wonderful Counselor
  • Jesus in Galilee as illustrated here and in His
Sermon on the Mount, is come to dismiss the
    mental darkness
  • of the region, as the
  • Wonderful Counselor to fulfill
  • The prophecy of Isaiah 91-6!

13
Public Preaching is the Primary Means of Group
Counseling
  • cf. Second Timothy 314-44

14
  • Jesus preached His message with certainty. He
did not come to dispute or to argue, but to
    proclaim, to preach

15
  • Preaching is the proclamation of certainties,
not the suggestion of possibilities. Jesus also
preached as one having authority and not as the
    scribes.

Matthew 418-1918And Jesus, walking by the Sea
of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter,
and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the
sea for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to
them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of
men."

them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of

21
Matthew 420-2220They immediately left their
nets and followed Him. 21Going on from there, He
saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee,
and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee
their father, mending their nets. And He called
them, 22and immediately they left the boat and
their father, and followed Him.

Galilean Fishing Nets
  • The Cast Net (Gk. amphiblestron)
  • - small at 20-25 feet diameter
  • - weighted sinkers like parachute
  • The Dragnet (Gk. diktua)
  • - large commercial at 100 feet
  • - trap fish through night

24
Three Traits Needed in Fishing
  • Fishermen Must Be Patient
  • Fishermen Must Be Persistent
  • Fishermen Must Be Courageous

25
  • The term fishers of men was not new. For
centuries Greek and Roman philosophers had used
it to describe the work of the man who seeks to
catch others by teaching and persuasion.

Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe
26
  • His word is Follow me, not merely that you
may be saved, nor even that you may be
sanctified but Follow me and I will make you
fishers of men. Be following Christ with that
intent and aim and fear that you are not
perfectly following Him unless in some degree He
is making use of you to be fishers of men.

Charles H. Spurgeon Sermon on Matt. 418-19
27
And he that is, Jesus saith unto them, Follow
me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they
straightway left their nets, and followed him.
cf. Matt. 419
28
To Follow After
  • The Greek word akoloutheo occurs 90 times in the
New Testament 79 in the Gospels, 4 in Acts, 1
in First Cor. and 6 times in Rev.
  • This term most often denotes the action of
someone answering the call of Jesus, whose whole
    life is redirected in obedience.

29
To Follow After
  • 23 passages combine to attest that Jesus most
often used Gospel command was to follow Him. Each
of these suggests something additional to a
physical following, although a physical following
    is implied in several.
  • cf. Matthew 1927-28 Mark 214 834 1021, 28
    Luke 511, 27-28 923 957-61 1822, 28 John
    143 812 104-5, 27 1226 2119-22 Rev.
    144.

Matthew 421-2221Going on from there, He saw
two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and
John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their
father, mending their nets. And He called them,
22and immediately they left the boat and their
father, and followed Him.
31
Four Major Callings of the Lord
  • Call to Discipleship
    John 135-51
  • Call to Disciple Making Matt
    418-21
  • Call to Full Time Disciple Making Lk 51-11
  • Call to Apostolic Disciple Making Matt 101-42

32
  • First Jesus calls us to salvation, apart from
which no other call could be effective. He then
calls us progressively to more specific and
    ever-expanding service.

Pastor John MacArthur
33
Matthew 2819-2019 Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all
things that I have commanded you and lo, I am
with you always, even to the end of the age."
Amen.A Call to Disciple Making, Not
Discipleship
34
  • Brethren the heathen are perishing shall we let
them perish? His name is blasphemed shall we be
quiet and still? The honor of Christ is cast into
the dust, and His foes revile His person and
    resist His throne

Pastor Charles Spurgeon Sermon on Matt. 2819-20
35
  • Shall we His soldiers suffer this, and not find
our hands, feeling for the hilt of our sword, the
sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God?
Our Lord delayeth His coming shall we begin to
sleep, or to eat, or to be drunken?...

Pastor Charles Spurgeon Sermon on Matt. 2819-20
36
  • Shall we not rather gird up the loins of our
mind, and to cry unto Him, Come, Lord Jesus,
come quickly? Shall we be content foolishly to
sit still? Nay, rather let us work out the
problem let us prove the promise of God to be
    true

Pastor Charles Spurgeon Sermon on Matt. 2819-20
37
  • let us prove the words of Jesus to be words of
soberness let us show the efficacy of His blood
and the invincibility of His Spirit, by going in
the spirit of faith, teaching all nations and
winning them to the obedience of Christ our Lord.

Pastor Charles Spurgeon Sermon on Matt. 2819-20
