THE VIEW
For families in need of assistance this holiday
season, please check out the following resources
available in our community The Ferndale Food
Bank gives out marvelous Thanksgiving Baskets on
Saturday, November 23, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
It is good to sign up early by going to the Food
Bank (in the United Church at 2034 Washington
Street), any Monday, Wednesday or Saturday
between 9 and 11 a.m. On Thanksgiving Day,
November 28, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., there
will be a community Thanksgiving feast available
at the Boys and Girls Club next to Pioneer Park.
This event is FREE and open to all.it is not
designed for low income families only, but rather
as an opportunity for any individual or group who
feels too tired to cook or who finds themselves
unable to participate in a traditional dinner
situation, or who just feels like celebrating
with their community. Entertainment will be
provided by Elmo Creech, the Balloon Man, and
cartoon videos will be showing for the children.
If you would like to volunteer to help set up,
serve or clean up for the event, contact Jim
Elliot at 384-6416. If you are expecting to
need help for your family for Christmas.either
food, gifts for your kids or both.please contact
the Family Community Coordinator or Counselor at
your school. These folks can also help you out
if you are looking for a voucher to get clothing
or household items, such as laundry soap, tooth
paste and so on. Once again, the Opportunity
Council is offering energy assistance to families
whose energy costs are high in the winter. To
make an appointment to pursue this kind of
assistance, please call 734-5121, extension 360,
or 1-800-649-5121.

Smart parenting class
The Ferndale School District in partnership with
parent facilitators and the Family Community
Coordinators will be presenting short one to two
hour parent education topics to families in the
district beginning December 2002. The first
free parent education opportunity is called
Smart Parenting. Smart Parenting is a simple
easy to follow guidance system that teaches
parents how to work on specific issues with their
children without arguing, yelling, or bribing.
The end result is an individualized democratic
system that teaches the child about rules and
natural consequences while enabling the child to
build self-esteem and self-control. What Smart

6th Grade students raise money for the Angel
Tree Mountain Views sixth grade students are
holding a penny drive to raise money for those in
need this holiday season. Students will raise
money over the next couple of weeks and on Dec.
12th they will head over to Bellis Fair Mall and
take names from the Angel Tree and purchase
gifts. Students will also get to spend a couple
of hours ice-skating at the Sportsplex. Please
contact your childs teacher if you have
questions regarding the trip. Its wonderful to
see these young students reaching out to those in
need during this time of year. Feel free to send
pennies if you are able.
