Basic beliefs of Shintoism include - Kami -The
Four Affirmations -Story of Creation
2In Shintoism it is believed that every mountain,
river, plant and beast have a spirit called kami.
3 ? Ame-no-minaka-nushi-no-kami (Kami-who-stands-
in-the-center-of-heavan) ? Taka-mi-mu-subi-no-kami
(High-producing-kami) ? Kami-musubi-no-kami (Divi
ne-producing-kami)
It is said that in the beginning there were three
original kami.
4There are four affirmations or basic beliefs
associated with Shintoism.
5The first affirmation
The first affirmation is the affirmation of
tradition and the family. This includes -rites
of life (birth marriage) -generation to
generation traditions
6The Second Affirmation
The second affirmation is the affirmation of the
love of nature. It is the Shinto belief that
nature is sacred and being with nature is being
with god.
7The Third Affirmation
The third affirmation is the affirmation of
physical cleanliness. -Something that is not
clean is ugly -You must be clean with the gods.
8The Fourth Affirmation
The fourth affirmation is the affirmation of
matsuri (observation of festivals)

islands of Japan and that the sun goddess
Amaterasu was the mother of the first emperor.
11There are three main forms of Shintoism

-Jinja
-Kyoha
-Folk Shinto
12Jinja is the largest of the three Shinto groups.
It was the original form of the religion. In
Jinja, the Emperor is worshipped as a living God.
13Kyoha Shintoism -Consists of 13 sects which were
founded by individuals since the start of the
19th century
14Folk Shinto Folk Shinto is not a Shinto sect it
has no formal organization. It is mostly seen in
local practices often by the side of a road.
