1
Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
  • Pamela Lilly
  • Cobb 6th Grade Campus
  • GPISD

2
Introduction
  • Using Statistics Is A Helpful Way To Study
  • Different Real Life Situations

3
Objective 5Teks 6.10B
  • Students will be able to identify the mean,
median, mode, and range of a set of data.

4
Purpose
  • The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the
concepts of mean, median, mode, and range and to
    help students develop understanding and
    familiarity with these ideas.

5
Vocabulary
  • The Mean (or average) is found by taking the sum
of the numbers added, then divide by how many
    numbers you added together.
  • The Median is chosen when the set of numbers are
arranged in numerical order. The middle value is
    the median.

6
Vocabulary
  • The Mode is the number that occurs most
frequently in a set of data
  • The Range is the difference between the first and
last number in a set of data.

7
Guided Practice Explanation 1
  • To find the Mean (or average)
  • Example
  • Set of data - 65, 65, 72, 75, 85, 85, 85, 92,
    95, 100, 100
  • Add 65 65 72 75 85 85 85 92 95
    100 100 Total 919
  • Divide the total 919 by 11 (the number of scores)
  • The Mean is 91.9 or 92

8
Guided Practice Explanation 2
  • To find the Median.
  • Example
  • Set of data Lowest to Highest - 65, 65, 72, 75,
    85, 85, 85, 92, 95, 100, 100
  • The number 85 is the middle value.
  • The Median is 85.

9
Guided Practice Explanation 3
  • To find the Mode.
  • Example
  • Set of data Lowest to Highest 65, 65, 72, 75,
    85, 85, 85, 92, 95, 100, 100
  • The number 85 occurs most often.
  • The Mode is 85.

10
Guided Practice Explanation 4
  • To find the Range.
  • Example
  • Set of data 65, 65, 72, 75, 85, 85, 85, 92, 95,
    100, 100
  • Subtract numbers 100 65 35
  • The Range is 35.

11
Independent Practice
  • Activity 1
  • Use a calculator to help you find the mean,
median, mode, and range of the following data.
  • 65, 92, 85, 70, 100, 83, 91, 75, 100, 95, 88,
    100, 83
  • Check students work.
  • Activity 2
  • Work in groups of 4. Using a deck of number
playing cards (A-10 divide evenly), find the
mean, median, mode, and range. Share your
    results.

12
Conclusion
  • Evaluation/Assessment
  • Students will be able to tell what they know
about mean, median, mode, and range.
  • 2. If these were your math grades, what would
    you learn by analyzing them?
