The nearest star to Earth is the Sun which is the
source of most of the energy on Earth, including
daylight. A star shines because nuclear fusion
in its core releases energy which traverses the
star's interior and then radiates into outer
space.

A star begins as a collapsing cloud of material
that is composed primarily of hydrogen along with
some helium and heavier trace elements. Once the
stellar core is sufficiently dense, some of the
hydrogen is steadily converted into helium
through the process of nuclear fusion. These
processes keep the star from collapsing upon
itself and the energy generates a stellar at the
surface and radiates into outer space. The Sun,
which is the source of virtually all light, heat
and energy reaching the Earth, is the nearest
star.

How many stars and planets? The universe is full
of stars, arranged in enormous groups called
galaxies. Our Sun is one star among 100 billion
in the Milky Way Galaxy. And there are about 100
billion galaxies in the universe, each with a
comparable number of stars.
How many is that? The number of stars in the
universe is more than the number of grains of
sand on all the beaches of the entire Earth! More
stars than there are grains of sand! Think about
that.
