National Light Rail Footprint
  • NLR
  • Buildout Started November 2002
  • Initially 4 10 Gb Wavelengths
  • To 40 10Gb Waves in Future

NREN Backbones reached 2.5-10 Gbps in 2002 in
Europe, Japan and USUS Transition now to
optical, dark fiber, multi-wavelength RE network
5
2002 Updates and Conclusions
  • The major NREN infrastructures in the US and
Europe, and the major links across the Atlantic
and Pacific used by HEPhave advanced rapidly to
the 2.5 -10 Gbps range in the past year
  • Protocols have advanced (FAST YottaYotta) to
    fully utilize the links
  • RD on the use of optically multiplexed
wavelengths is getting underway in the
Netherlands, Canada, and the US (IWIRE,
    TeraGrid, NLR)
  • End users face a variety of problems, from policy
barriers to high commercial costs, to overloaded
or poorly configured regional and/or local
networks, even in some areas in the favored
    regions of the world
  • While the less favored regions have progressed,
the Digital Divide, measured in terms of years of
delay for equal performance, has been maintained.
  • Action is required, or the Digital Divide with
    suddenly increase
  • This action is vital if we are to make the most
of current and future major scientific programs,
(the Grid systems on which they will depend) and
for the continued health of our global
    collaborations

6
Action Items What is Needed Now
  • Request Help from ICFA on the Digital Divide
  • ICFA SCIC Will Help by Setting Up and
Maintaining anHENP World Network Database and
    pointing up problems
  • We will seek advice and action from ICFA members
    on specific issues
  • We propose a model HENP World Network
  • To bring to the attention of vendors
  • To focus the efforts of organizations, such as
    the IEEAF, who can help
  • A strong monitoring effort (the IEPM) is required
  • Such an effort needs to be expanded
  • We need ICFAs help to get better world coverage
  • We need to propagate new tools information on
    best practices
  • Integrate Monitoring and Support for the
Community in a New Organization ?
  • More Action Items from the Committee, please.

7
Monitoring Report
  • Mission Statement on Page 1 Needs to Be
    Formalized
  • Editing see the Summary
  • Short Executive Summary at the Beginning
  • Main conclusions from the monitoring data so far
  • Need better coverage
  • Stronger support is required
  • Mention outstanding technical issues
  • High performance monitoring
  • Interface to the Grid systems, and Grid
    monitoring
  • Help from ICFA
  • Help get better coverage more countries, more
    sites monitored
  • Help getting support Manpower, fundscontacts
    with funding agencies

8
Advanced Technologies Report
  • Little or no progress possible over the holidays,
    it seems
  • We need to submit a well-prepared, if brief
report to ICFA nowwe can submit a longer report
    early in 2004
  • Version of mid-December not at the link in the
December 13Minutes. We need to re-distribute
    that draft now.
  • Ask help from technical members of ICFA SCIC to
provide additional help to finish this report

9
Digital Divide Report
  • Excellent work by Alberto Santoro and his
groupcollected a lot of material made many
    contacts
  • Focus on the nature of the problem, and Latin
    America, in December
  • Very welcome added effort from Julio Ibarra and
    Heidi Alvarez (AMPATH)
  • Quantitative Material from Each World Region
needs tobe verified as being current else
replacedMaps for some regions need to be
    provided.
  • This is important each ICFA SCIC Member bears
    responsibility to do this
  • Writing we need to improve on the sharpness
    andclarity of the arguments
  • Make clear to ICFA, upfront, what the main issues
    are
  • Clarify what ICFA can do
  • If there are no clear paths to a solution, then
we candiscuss the problems with ICFA, or with
interested members, in a discussion forum
  • Today we will go through the report and
    appendicesin some detail
  • Then we will Collectively take action
