  • Discover the users needs, in terms of what their
    job entails
  • Gives the context in which the users job is
    done
  • Shows inputs to and outputs from a users job
  • Will allow more detailed analysis on how the
    needs just discovered are now met by this job --
    the following work flows
  • Makes explicit the users needs for doing this job

  • 50,000 foot layout of cards that define the work
    involved with the users job
  • Put comments on yellow card
  • Sort the cards into logical categories
  • Assign category titles

  • The output may also be described in terms of a
    high level work flow
  • Put tasks on yellow cards
  • Assign titles and align columns on paper
  • Order the tasks in the appropriate flow

Scope the Big Picture
  • Circle the cards that represent tasks within the
    scope of the project
  • See how the task fits in the overall job scheme
  • Allow the user to talk about other areas of their
    job, without spending undo amount of time on it

Current Work Flow
  • Use as input the tasks scoped in the Big Picture
  • Take one of the tasks and expand it at a lower
    level of detail
  • Keep in mind that the work will be described as
    it is done today
  • If users mention issues with the any of the
    steps, record them on pink stickies and attach
    them to the back of that task card

  • Using the Current Workflow, document issues with

    corresponds to the issue

Blue Sky Work Flow
  • Create an ideal version of the flow that accounts
    for the issues and bottlenecks
  • Want to think outside the box
  • No criticisms, write them on stickies and place
    on back of cards

Prioritization of Blue Sky
  • Prioritize each Blue Sky step on two separate
    dimensions
  • Users - rate the importance as high, medium, or
    low
  • Implementation - rate the difficulty as
    difficult, soso, easy
  • Circle the portion of the Blue Sky flow that you
    will focus on in the remainder of this task
    analysis session

  • Using the Blue Sky flow as input, design a
    compromise between the desirable issues and the
    development constraints
  • Develop this workflow at a more detailed level
    than the previous flows
