Title: The Secrets Behind Advertising

1
The Secrets Behind Advertising
  • What really happens behind the scenes.
  • By Clemmie and Meghan

2
What is Advertising?
  • Advertising is a way for companies to convince
you that their product is good so that you buy
it. Advertising is on t.v., billboards,
    internet, clothing, radio, stores, etc

3
What is Advertising Propaganda?
  • Propaganda is a way for
  • advertisers to influence
  • the buyers decisions.
  • Companies use
  • propaganda to try and
  • change the way you
  • think what they think
  • about their product.

4
Product Placement
  • Product placement is when companies put their
product in a movie, music video, T.V. etc.to
make you want the product without it being an
    actual ad for that product.
  • In music videos companies will not say buy
Pepsi, they will just have a celebrity drink or
carry it around. Example When 50 cent made a
song about his new G-unit Reebok shoes.

5
Targets
  • Companies target people ages 12-24.
  • Companies think people in this age group will
buy there product. They also have lots of money
    to spend.

6
Length of commercials
  • An average commercial is around 30 seconds or
less. If it is too long, people will get bored of
it and not want to watch the commercial.

7
Selective Editing
  • Selective Editing is when companies sell
their product but only showing the good things
that can happen when you have this product.
  • Example Sport equipment companies will
promote only the good catches and the perfect
    throws.

8
Put Downs
  • Put downs are when companies put down other
companies by saying that their product works
better and it is the best one etc.Example
Charmin the toilet paper company always puts
    down other toilet paper companies.

9
Star Power
  • Star power is when companies use celebrities
to sell their products. The buyer thinks that if
a celebrity has it so should they.
  • Example Pepsi uses Britney Spears in their
    commercials.

10
Facts and Figures
  • Facts and Figures is when companies use facts,
figures, statistics, etc to make their product
    seem better.
  • Example Pepto Bismol always says Work
  • 10 times faster than leading brands.

11
Ideal Kids
  • Ideal kids are when the family seems
perfect, they look good and act perfect, never get
    in fights, etc.
  • Example Gap always makes the kids look good in
    all the clothes they wear.

12
Sounds good
  • Sounds good is when companies use catchy tunes
to help sell their product. Example We all know
were the rainbow goes into a Pot of Gold.

13
FORD
  • Ford is a good example of advertising
techniques. They use the star power technique by
using Wayne Gretzky (a famous Canadian hockey
player) as their spokesperson. They also have a
very catchy tune. Built for life in Canada.
