WUK PROJECT - VIENNA
  • The name of the promoting organisation is WUK
    Werkstätten und Kulturhaus, Vienna, Austria.
  • The project continuous since 1986, average
duration for each participant up to 36 months
  • The projects contact person

3
PROJECT S AIMS
  • The objectives of this project are
  • To (re)integrate socially disadvantaged young
people into society and into work.
  • To provide a formally acknowledged qualification
    (technical or handicraft profession)
  • To increase their social status
  • To assist them on their way into the work life.
  • To offer training in social skills, leading to
    individual competences in problem solving,
encouraging them to act on their own initiative
  • To establish the prerequisites for a future-based
    securing of their existence

4
TARGET GROUP

youth (age between15 and 25 years), especially
young women who want to learn a traditional
    male profession.

ORGANISATIONAL ASPECTS
  • People involved
  • Master
  • Journeyman
  • Social-pedagogic experts
  • Psychologist
  • Adviser for outplacement
  • Each group consisted of 29 trainees (painters,
    masons, carpenters)

9
STRENGTHS OF THE PROJECT
  • The project has a very high
  • tutor/learner rate about 10 young
  • people
  • one master and one journeyman for each profession
    (both full time employed)
  • three social-pedagogic experts
  • one psychologist,
  • one adviser for outplacement and
  • one teacher.

10
Weakness of the project
  • This staff-intensive strength is also the
weakness, because in times of budget restrictions
and the fact that all vocational trainings are
put to tenders make it increasingly difficult to
    maintain this high quality.

11
EXPERIMENTAL PHASEBEST PRACTICE
  • Regular sports activities (generally team sports
but also individual sports) and other team-based
activities which combine a degree of
competitiveness with others and with oneself
  • According to the Experimental Phase document, we
started with the items 9, 12 and 24 immediately
    after the summer holidays

12
EXPERIMENTAL PHASEBEST PRACTICE
  • Frequent trips, school trips and external
    placements and
  • real situations, designed and graduated
    according to the different age

13
EXPERIMENTAL PHASEBEST PRACTICE
  • Item 10 Although we had only five weeks where we
could introduce one afternoon of indoor soccer
training to the participants, we were happy to
see a very positive effect on group dynamics and
    diminution of mutual aggression.
  • At the moment, we have only male participants. We
have to think about how to find a solution when
we have a small number of female participants.

14
EXPERIMENTAL PHASEBEST PRACTICE
  • Item 24 Before we had access to the sports
centre, we had introduced a half-day excursion
    every month to various socio-economic
institutions. They were regarded by many
participants as holiday, and in one excursion
to a company repairing consumer electronic
articles, some items were reported to be stolen
during our visit. So we have decided to cancel
    these activities.
