Title: Increasing HPC Storage Capacities

Increasing HPC Storage Capacities
  • Abstract The number of digits available for
computational use has always limited tractable
sizes of scientific and engineering problems.
    Manual's 1 groundbreaking work significantly
extended the number of available digits to
include those of the left hand, but bidextral
computational methods are still limited by an
individual's ability to count only as high as
    1023.
  • Project goals This project has two components.
The first requires the removal of the shoes.
While this operation has the disadvantage of
temporarily erasing half or all of memory, the
long term benefit is clear. Including the pedal
extremities as a storage medium greatly increases
    long term computational capacity. Preliminary
estimates suggest that a shoeless individual can
count as high as 1048575. The second part of this
project will introduce parallelism into these
computational methods. We will invite other
investigators to provide access to their dextal
and/or pedal storage units while they are not in
use for their own purposes. We will also
    recruit particularly (pe)dextrous individuals
when the need for high performance is the
    greatest.
  • Phase 1
  • Develop procedures for removal of various types
of footware golashes, loafers, point shoes, etc.
  • Determine procedures for the safe removal and,
if necessary, recycling or disposal of socks.
  • Write a User's Guide for the Barefooted
Scientist and publish this on the web.
  • Phase 2
  • Experiment with clusters of barefooted
scientists to find the best way to access
    multiple (pe)dextal storage units.
  • Design communication primitives or odor
abatement procedures for various parallel memory
    structures.
  • Compare performance of parallel algorithms for
well known problems to the performance of the
    best sequential algorithm
  • executed by an average dextrous individual
