  • New Wireless Broadband Services
  • From
  • Phone providers
  • Presented by Afam Limited

3
Overview
  • We are bombarded from providers by promises of
such fast wireless speeds that we smile and our
    hair flies.
  • Bandwidth costs and network health are the
    limiting factors.
  • It maybe more expensive.
  • It can be useful for some uses mobility for
    example.

4
What I won't cover
  • TTCL's DSL provision, it is not wireless
  • So called fixed wireless

5
What is broadband?
  • The ability to watch streaming video, which is
    256-1024Kbps.
  • Bandwidth in large amounts via VSAT in Africa is
    2,500-3,000 / Mbps
  • Habari pays 2,800/ Mbps

6
What Local Operators are offering?
  • Methods
  • GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) using the
    existing GSM network.
  • TDMA/CDMA good distance and penetration
  • WiMax - New industry wide standard. Making
    cheaper CPEs.
  • G3 (Third Generation High Speed DownLink Data
Packet Access) - The Holy Grail.

7
  • Prices
  • Equipment from Tshs.200,000 to 350,000
  • Bandwidth charges 250tsh to 500tsh per 1Mbps.
Very few of our clients use less than 10MB/ day.
    More like 50MB

8
What happens over the world and how they perform
on world market?
  • Have not replace fixed wireless and cable
  • Japan and Korea, high density of fixed and mobile
    Internet.
  • How do they connect to the outside world?
  • They are used while commuting and fancy messaging
    etc.

9
  • Not saying this is not a valid use
  • Good mobility, but hand helds limiting and
    laptops are bulky.

10
What is the hype from Providers?
  • Speed is NOT because of the medium. In fact
    wireless is slow in comparison.
  • The limiting factor on all providers networks in
Tanzania is the cost of bandwidth to and from the
Internet Backbone. And fast Internet is
    expensive in Tz.

11
  • Saturation they roll out fast and slow down as
    subscribers grow.
  • And the health of the network.
  • Support

12
  • Wireless limitations, line of sight, Associations
    on a tower
  • Last mile sharing
  • Many wireless towers are more points of failure.
    Electricity is a big factor.

13
What these devices have to offer
  • Some places where you might want to use these
    devices
  • They have some interesting prepaid per Mbps
schemes. If you are user that uses couple times
a week for an hour this could be attractive. But
you have to ensure your network/computer is
    clean.
  • Backup connection for your office. Pay as you
use it. Still it is pretty slow but for checking
    important mails

14
  • Working while traveling.
  • mobility

15
Conclusion
  • So the reasons to take these services are not
speed or cost. It is for mobility and
    connections out of Habari's range.

16
What Habari has to work on Habari's Challenges
  • Cable theft
  • Cable copper and fibre underground or secured.
  • Tanesco Power on towers and DSLAM subpoints
  • Mobility, should we add this service?
  • Legacy Radios with slower throughput
  • Interference on wireless
