  • Todays objectives
  • You will be able to explain what is meant by
    local authority provision.
  • You will look at the function and structure of
    clubs.
  • We will discuss the difference between private
    and public leisure provision.

Local Authority Provision
  • What is meant by local authority provision?
  • Local authorities have a duty to provide
    facilities for their area. One of the most
    important is sporting and leisure facilities.
  • These come in 2 categories
  • School and educational facilities
  • Leisure centres
  • Other facilities include libraries, parks,
    playing fields

Schools need sports facilities to teach PE. DUAL
USE is where the public and also use the
facilities, rather than them standing empty. i.e.
weekends evenings. Examples Astroturf's
(Hillcrest Leasowes) or sports centres
(Crestwood Hillcrest)

  • What is the next step for pupils after school
    sport?
  • Local clubs e.g. Dudley hockey club, athletics
    at the dell, local football clubs.
  • Clubs employ coaches / players to visit schools
    to recruit youngsters to join their club e.g.
    Halesowen hockey club.
  • School sports co-ordinator programme.
  • The more youngsters joining a club, the better
    the
  • reputation standard of the school team.

  • Youth Policies
  • Young people are encouraged to join clubs,
    helping to
  • sustain the life of the club.
  • Can you name some youngsters who have grown up to
    play
  • for very well known clubs?
  • E.g. Man Utd Scholes, Beckham, Neville
  • Liverpool Gerrard Owen.
  • Most of these clubs now have training academies.
  • Wolfendon Gap report stated that once people
    leave
  • school / college many lose interest in sport as
    it is no longer
  • compulsory. There are less opportunities and so
    participation
  • levels drop. Extra facilities and sports
    development officers
  • will hopefully increase participation levels.

  • the share holders make lots of money for them.

  • Overall controller of sport is UK Sport
  • which has 4 roles
  • Increase participation
  • Doping control
  • Attracting major events
  • Co-ordinate national framework.
