Title: The Strength of David

1
The Strength of David
  • Lessons from South Africa

2
INTRODUCTION
  • Zec 128 In that day Jehovah shall defend around
the people of Jerusalem. And it will be, he who
is feeble among them at that day shall be like
David and the house of David shall be like God,
like the Angel of Jehovah before them.

3
INTRODUCTION Cont
  • Feeble - hannikhshal, the stumbling one, who
cannot stand firmly upon his feet (1Sa_22-4
Nothing and no one is holy like GOD, no rock
mountain like our God. Don't dare talk
pretentiously-- not a word of boasting, ever! For
GOD knows what's going on. He takes the measure
of everything that happens. The weapons of the
strong are smashed to pieces, while the weak are
    infused with fresh strength. )
  • No one is feeble when God is with them! Rom 837
But in all these things we more than conquer
    through Him who loved us.

4
Questions
  • How was David strong?
  • What was the source of his strength (cf Samson
    the source was his hair)
  • How may this apply to us?

5
Davids strength grew in Worship
  • As a shepherd, it got boring! David learned to
    play the harp and worship
  • The harp developed muscles later used for warfare
  • The worship developed a relationship with God
    that built faith
  • Lesson one sitting and waiting for God to do
something great in your life is not wasted time
    if you are a worshipper

6
Davids strength grew in struggle.
  • During the hunted years, David had many
opportunities to build his faith in God
  • Against Goliath the Philistines (victory of
faith, 1 Sam. 17)    -Against Saul (endurance of
faith, 1 Sam. 18-26)    -Against the Amalekites
(the battle of faith, 1 Sam. 27)

7
The Source of Davids strength
  • He was from Judah (Praise!)
  • He was a worshipper.
  • He was humble and submitted to leaders even when
    they tried to kill him.
  • He kept the faith, believing the promise even
when it seemed it would never happen David
wasnt afraid to wait for Gods perfect timing

8
David The Worshipper
  • 2Sam 6 David danced dressed in a priests
    garment
  • Davids wife, Michal, saw his leaping and
skipping and joyful exuberance and only had
contempt (Sauls daughter the old always hates
    the new)
  • Why a priests garment? Because before the Lord,
David came not as a man, or as a king, but as a
servant, a royal priest of God! (Cf. 1Pet 29)

9
Davids Strength
  • To the Jew reading Zech 128,, the highest type
of strength and glory on earth (2Sa_178
2Sa_183 Joe_310) is that of King David
  • This strength shall be the baseline in the
    revived church.
  • Not a strength of perfection (remember Psalm 51
born out of repentance) but a strength of grace
    and faith

10
Concluding Thoughts
  • David was committed to the Mission no matter
    the personal cost
  • David also committed his resources to accomplish
    Gods purposes
  • Ultimately, it is not David the man (who was
frail and sinned), nor David the King (who was
strong and won great victories) but David the
worshipper that reveal the source of Davids
    strength
