Resurrection!
  • Luke 23.50 24.12

2
A cursed death
  • If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to
death and his body is hung on a tree, you must
not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be
sure to bury him that same day, because anyone
who is hung on a tree is under Gods curse. You
must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is
giving you as an inheritance (Deut 21.22-23).

3
A cursed death
  • Joshua hung the king of Ai on a tree and left
him there until evening. At sunset, Joshua
ordered them to take his body from the tree and
throw it down at the entrance of the city gate.
And they raised a large pile of rocks over it,
which remains to this day (Joshua 8.29).

4
A cursed death
  • Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the
cave at Makkedah. When Joshua was told that the
five kings had been found hiding in the cave at
Makkedah, he said, Roll large rocks up to the
mouth of the cave, and post some men there to
guard it. Joshua said, Open the mouth of the
cave and bring those five kings out to me.
Then Joshua struck and killed the kings and hung
them on five trees, and they were left hanging on
the trees until evening. At sunset Joshua gave
the order and they took them down from the trees
and threw them into the cave where they had been
hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed
large rocks, which are there to this day (Joshua
    10.16-18, 22, 26-27).

Joseph of Arimathea
  • a member of the Council, a good and upright man,
who had not consented to their decision and
    action (23.50b-51a).
  • Burying the deceased, in Jewish tradition was a
means of fulfilling the obligation to share with
those in need. To be refused burial, conversely,
was a fate interpreted under the heading of
    divine curse (Green 1997 830).

6
Three Women
  • Typically, preparation for burial entailed
washing, anointing, and clothing the body. The
warm climate in ancient Palestine dictated a
speedy burial, with spices and ointments used not
for purposes of embalming but in order to counter
the stench of decomposition (Green 1997 830).
  • On the first day of the week, very early in the
morning, the women took the spices they had
prepared and went to the tomb (24.1).
