• Some Bible EXAMPLES of giving
• 1. Abraham and his son. Gen. 222, Take now thy
  son, thine only son, whom thou lov-est, even
  Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah. And
  offer him there for a burnt-offer-ing upon one of
  the mountains which I will tell thee of.
• A. Abraham obeyed God, v. 12, Lay not thy hand
  upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him.
  For now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou
  hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from
  me.

• Jn. 316, For God so loved the world, that he
  gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
  believeth on him should not perish, but have
  eternal life.
• Rom. 832-34, He that spared not his own Son,
  but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not
  also with him freely give us all things? 33 Who
  shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect?
  It is God that justifieth 34 who is he that
  condemneth?

3. Early Christians

• A. Sacrificed personal goods. Acts. 244,45,
  And all that believed were together, and had all
  things common 45 and they sold their
  possessions and goods, and parted them to all,
  according as any man had need. Acts 432-37,
  33, And with great power gave the apostles their
  witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus
  and great grace was upon them all. 34 For

was there among them any that lacked for as many
as were possessors of lands or houses sold them,
and brought the prices of the things that were
sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles' feet
and distribution was made unto each, according as
any one had need. 36 And Joseph, who by the
apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being
interpreted, Son of exhortation), a Levite, a man
of Cyprus by race, 37 having a field, sold it,
and brought the money and laid it at the
apostles' feet.

Acts 51-11, But a certain man nam-ed Ananias,
with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2
and kept back part of the price, his wife also
being privy to it, and brought a certain part,
and laid it at the apostles' feet. 3 But Peter
said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to
lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part
of the price of the land? 4 While it remained,
did it not re-main thine own? and after it was
sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that
thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou
has not lied unto men, but unto God.

• 2 Cor. 84,5, beseeching us with much
  entreaty in regard of this grace and the
  fellowship in the ministering to the saints 5

  gave their own selves to the Lord and to us

• The COMMAND to give (on the Lords Day)
• 1. As we prosper
• 1 Cor. 162, Upon the first day of the week
  let each one of you lay by him in store, as he
  may prosper, that no collections be made when I
  come.
• A. Our giving is to keep pace with our
  prosperity. Remember it is GOD who gives us
  prosperity!
• 2 Cor. 910, he that supplieth seed to the
  sower and bread for food, shall supply and
  multiply your seed for sowing, and in-crease the
  fruits of your righteousness.

2. As we purpose 2 Cor. 97, Let each man do
accord-ing as he hath purposed in his heart.

• A. Purpose determination, intention,
  resolution, forethought.
• Does this describe MY giving? God accepts no
  other kind!
• 3. Cheerfully ( the heart must be right!)
• 2 Cor. 97, not grudgingly, or of necessity
  for God loveth a cheerful giver.
• Does God love MY / YOUR giving?
• 4. Ones manner of giving can jeopardize
  himself!
• 2 Cor. 96, He that soweth .

sparingly shall reap also sparingly and he that
soweth bountifully shall reap also boun-tifully.

• 4. With this first-day-of-the-week giving the
  local church has wherewith to do works of
  benevolence limited to saints.
• Rom. 1525,26, but now, I say, I go unto
  Jerusalem, ministering unto the saints. 26 For it
  hath been the good pleasure of Macedonia and
  Achaia to make a certain contribution for the
  poor among the saints that are at Jerusa-lem.
• 2 Cor. 84 91,12, the fellowship in the
  ministering to the saints For as touching

the ministering to the saints ... For the
ministration of this service not only filleth up
the measure of the wants of the saints.

• 1 Cor. 161, Now concerning the collection for
  the saints, as I gave order to the churches of
  Galatia, so also do ye.
• A. The Scriptures do not authorize the local
  church to do works of general benevo-lence.
• B. The local church is not a glorified Red
  Cross or Salvation Army.
• C. Benevolence is not a tool (bait) of
  evangelism.
• D. The social gospel is of Modernism!

The command to give(DAILY, to anyone in need)

• 1. The lesson of the Good Samaritan, Lk. 10
  25-37, given to him who is desiring to justify
  himself. (Is this I? You? He did not love his
  neighbor as himself)
• A. Jesus command Go and do thou like-wise
  (as the Samaritan who showed mercy on him).
• Many professed Christians need to go and do
  likewise!
• 2. This benevolence is not limited as to any
  particular recipients.
• A. Gal. 610, So then, as we have
  oppor-tunity, let us work that which is good

toward all men, and especially toward them that
are of the household of the faith.

• B. Jas. 127, Pure religion and undefiled
  before our God and Father is this, to visit the
  fatherless and widows in their affliction, and
  to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
• C. Let no one confuse individual action with
  that of the local church! (This the
  institu-tional brethren do).
• D. In Gods plan nobody is left out of
  be-nevolence, neither saint nor sinner!

The PURPOSE of giving

• 1. On the first day of the week
• A. So the church can alleviate physical needs
  of poor saints (not to bait sinners to come hear
  the gospel!).
• 2 Cor. 912, For the ministration of this
  service not only filleth up the measure of the
  wants of the saints, but aboundeth also through
  many thanksgivings unto God.
• Acts 1129, And the disciples, every man
  according to his ability, determined to send
  relief unto the brethren that dwelt in Judea.

B. For church support of gospel
preach-ing Phil. 415,16, And ye yourselves
also know, ye Philippians, that in the beginning
of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no
church had fellowship with me in the mat-ter of
giving and receiving but ye only 16 for even
in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my
need.

• 2 Cor. 118, I robbed other churches, taking
  wages of them that I might minister unto you.
• 1 Cor. 913,14, Know ye not that they that
  minister about sacred things eat of

the things of the temple, and they that wait
upon the altar have their portion with the
al-tar? 14 Even so did the Lord ordain that
they that proclaim the gospel should live of the
gospel.

• C. To bear fruit.
• Phil. 417-19, Not that I seek for the gift
  but I seek for the fruit that increaseth to your
  account. 18 But I have all things, and abound
  I am filled, having received from Epaphroditus
  the things that came from you, and odor of a
  sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable,
  well-pleasing to God. 19 And my God...

riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

• 2. In daily giving as an individual (i.e., not
  the collective action of the local church)
• A. For support of gospel preaching
• Gal. 66, But let him that is taught in the
  word communicate unto him that teacheth in all
  good things.
• 3 John 5-8, Beloved, thou doest a faith-ful
  work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that
  are brethren and strangers withal 6 who bare
  witness to thy love before the church whom thou
  wilt do well to set

forward on their journey worthily of God 7
because that for the sake of the Name they went
forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 8 We
therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be
fellow-workers for the truth

• B. Give aid to any needy person, Christian or
  otherwise.
• Luke 10, parable of the good Samaritan.
• 1 Jn.317,18, But whoso hath the world's
  goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and
  shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the
  love of God abide in him? 18 My Little
  children, let us not love in word, neither with
  the tongue but in deed and truth.

• CONCLUSION
• 1. This is a lesson on stewardship!
• A. Lk. 161-9, the use our material bless-ings,
  on loan from God, to secure for our-selves
  eternal tabernacles (heaven).
• B. Lk. 1610-13, God is testing us with
  unrighteous mammon to see if He can entrust us
  with true riches (eternal life).
• C. Lk. 1614-17, Lovers of money scoff at
  Gods teaching on stewardship, exalting
  themselves.

D. Lk. 1618, Jesus gives an illustration of
the way professed believers in God misuse Gods
revealed will (the Bible).

• 2. This lesson is for everyone!
• A. But I still live at home and dont have a
  job yet. Do you have any money? (Teach your
  children this important lesson in their youth!)
• B. No one is exempt from his responsi-bilities
  toward the use of his money!
• 3. God gives us the power to get money, Deut.
  817,18, lest thou say in thy heart, My power
  and the might of my hand hath

gotten me this wealth. 18 But thou shalt
re-member Jehovah thy God, for it is he that
giveth thee power to get wealth.

• 4. God will call all of his stewards to an
  accounting. Dont let him accuse you of wasting
  His goods (Lk. 161)!
