Title: Technology Education

1
Technology Education
  • Production Technology

2
Manufacturing
  • The changing of materials into usable products
  • Materials are one of the seven resources of
    technology
  • The two types of materials are - Natural and
    Synthetic

3
Natural Materials
  • Wood - Hardwood or Softwood. Hardwood comes from
deciduous trees most furniture is made from
hardwood. Softwood is made from evergreen trees
and is used for construction lumber

4
  • Metals - are ferrous (containing iron) or
    non-ferrous (without iron) Natural metals
include Iron, Aluminum, Copper, Zinc, Tin and
    Lead

5
Synthetic Materials
  • Plastics - Fall into two categories
  • Thermoplastics are heated and molded into shape -
they can be heated and remolded
  • Thermoset Plastics are heated and can only be
    molded once

6
More Synthetics
  • Ceramics - made by firing (baking clay) used for
tiles, bricks, cookware and space shuttle tiles
  • Composites Materials - combining two or more
    materials. Ex Concrete plywood

7
Processing Materials
  • Raw Materials - exists as they do in nature. Ex
    a tree.
  • Industrial Materials Materials that are used to
make products. Ex Trees become Lumber.

8
Processing Materials
  • Primary Processes change raw materials into
    industrial materials. Three primary processes
are Mechanical - Thermal and Chemical

9
Processing Materials
  • Secondary Processes - turn industrial materials
into finished - Lumber into Furniture
  • Forming - changing the shape of the material
without adding or taking anything away
  • Casting, Forging, Stamping, and Extrusion

10
Processing Materials
  • Separating - is the cutting of materials to size
and shape - Some of the materials are often lost.

11
  • Combining - putting materials together through -
    mixing, mechanical fasteners, soldering and
    braizing and coating
  • Conditioning - changes the internal structure of
    the material

12
7 ResourcesAll activities of technology rely on
7 resources
  • Energy
  • Tools/machines
  • Money (Capital)
  • Time
  • People
  • Information
  • Materials

13
Manufacturing System
  • Design and Engineering
  • Purchasing
  • Production

14
Production Systems
  • Custom Production Products are made to order
ie - a wedding cake made for a customer or a
cruise ship or oil rig can also be a custom
product. They require a lot of customer input.

15
  • Job-Lot-Production a specific quantity is
    producedsuch as 10000 skateboard decks.
  • Continuous Production usually produced on an
assembly line also called mass production.

16
Computers in Manufacturing
  • Computer aided design (CAD)
  • Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)

17
  • CAM and CAD are a combination of two separate
systems computers can be used to design a
product and then the same computer may then be
able to control the machines that manufacture the
    product.

18
Impacts of Production
  • Economy - manufacturing is a major part of the
economy. It accounts for 20 of Gross Domestic
Product (the total value of goods and services
    produced each year)
  • Society - New products make life easier and
increase our leisure time. New medical products
    save lives.

19
  • Safety - factories and production methods are
less dangerous. Safety equipment is mandatory.
  • Environment - both positive and negative impacts
    are felt.
