Joining Forces
  • Millions of people are in America illegally. The
actual number could be eight million. It could be
20 million. No agency is able to do the math.
Among those studying the issue there is broad
agreement that U.S. immigration policy is broken
and no consensus on a strategy for repair.
  • Some seek comprehensive changes in laws that
have become incomprehensible. Some want to close
the borders and build physical barriers. Some
would offer those now living in the United States
a clear path to citizenship. Some would send them
back to their homelands.Immigrants built America,
and every American has a stake in how the nation
    responds.
  • In coming weeks, The Wall Street Journal,
National Public Radio and Yahoo! News will lay
the issues before the public and invite a
vigorous, constructive debate over what could be
the most corrosive issue of the next American
    century.

Immigration Facing the Facts
Employer Verification
America was built on the backs of newcomers who
were just looking for a chance to earn a day's
pay. Labor bosses were eager to hire cheap labor
and the arrangements that resulted, though
frequently brutal and inhumane, had the
undeniable value of simplicity. Not
