May Day
May Day is celebrated on the first day of May. It
coincides with the ancient Celtic celebration of
Beltane. On this day, people welcome Summer.
It is a tradition in different European
countries, but especially in many English towns
and villages.

On May Day, people gather flowers and put them by
their doors and windows to keep out fairies.
In many places they make a bonfire and people
dance and jump over it.

• The greatest tradition of May Day is Maypole
  Dancing. They put a pole and people dance around
  it interweaving colour ribbons.

• Traditionally, everybody wore white clothes on
  May Day.
• Nowadays, some people wear long dresses.

Maypole cake is typical of May Day. A big cake is
in the middle of the plate with several cupcakes
around. There is a stick and ribbons on the
cake, like a small "Maypole". They decorate it
with some candy fruit slices.
