Early Life

• Interested in space from a very young age
• Father built her a laboratory when she was in
  grade seven
• female athlete of the year senior year of high
  school

• 1968, Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and
  agriculture, University of Guelph
• 1971, Masters degree in Experimental Pathology,
  University of Western in Ontario
• 1974, Ph. D in Neurobiology, University of
  Toronto
• 1977, M. D., McMaster University

Career

• In 1983 she was accepted into Canadian Space
  Agency
• Chosen from over 4000 applicants
• Flew on Discovery from January 22 to 30, 1992
• Left Canadian Space Agency on September 4, 1992

Accomplishments

• School was named after her (see left)
• 1993-96, chairperson for the Friends of the
  Environment Foundation
• Awarded Officer of the Order of Canada
• Wrote a book called Touching the Earth about
  her life and her experiences in space
• Added to the Canadian Hall of Fame in 1983

• A great role model because she made her dream to
  become an astronaut come true

• I learned about all the things she needed to have
  to be considered for the space program
