Title: Visit a Mosque or Masjid

1
Visit a Mosque or Masjid
  • Agreed Syllabus for religious education

2
This is the outside of the mosque
  • It is in Wightman Road,
  • Haringey.
  • Notice the tall minaret.
  • In Muslim countries
  • the call to prayer is
  • broadcast
  • from the minaret.

3
Entering the Mosque
  • One of the first things
  • you will notice upon
  • entering the mosque
  • is a shoe rack.
  • Muslims do not
  • want filth in the
  • House of ALLAH so they
  • take off their shoes.

4
Making Wudu
  • You will notice what looks to be a wash room,
it is called the wudu room. This is where Muslims
cleanse their bodies in preparation for prayer.

5
Inside the mosque
  • After this we enter the
  • main prayer room
  • called the musalla.
  • This is the Mihrab,
  • if we face this we are
  • facing the direction of
  • Makkah.

6
When a Muslim visits the Mosque
  • If a Muslim arrives before the call to prayer
(the adhan), they will pray 2 rakat (units) of
    prayer before they are seated.
  • After being seated, a Muslim will read the
Qur'an, talk quietly to other people, try to
memorise ahadith (traditions of the Prophet,
    pbuh), or rest.
  • If the call to prayer has sounded, Muslims join
each other in rows, shoulder to shoulder so that
the line is straight and they are close to one
another. They face Makkah to say their prayers.

7
Prayer times
  • Clocks in the mosque make sure
  • everyone knows when to pray.
  • Praying together creates a
  • feeling of unity oneness
  • amongst the people, no
  • matter what their
  • background

8
The Imam
  • The most knowledgeable of
  • the followers should lead the
  • prayer. He is called the Imam.
  • The Imam tells us that
  • he stands in front of the
  • rows of followers,
  • facing the Qiblah (Makkah)
  • begins the actions of prayer.

9
Demonstrating Prayer
  • This boy is showing
  • his classmates how
  • he prays at the mosque.
  • He is facing the Mihrab
  • and is showing us the
  • different parts of the
  • prayer.
  • Mr Alli from the Mosque
  • is helping him

10
The womens prayer area
  • The women often pray in a special gallery. This
is the womens gallery of the mosque.
  • In this mosque they can look down onto the prayer
area and hear what the Imam is saying.

11
Prayer is important to Muslims
  • This girl is showing
  • how Muslims pray.
  • Notice that her head
  • is covered out of
  • respect for Allah.
