History
  • Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier, also known as
Tiradentes (Tooth Puller) was the leader of the
first organized movement against Portuguese rule
in Brazil in 1789. He was born in 1748 near Sao
Joao del Rei in Minas Gerais. He was reasonably
well educated and worked as a physician, merchant
    and dentist.
  • He organized the Inconfidência Mineira in Minas
    Gerais advocating complete independence from
Portugal. He was publicly hanged in Rio on April
21, 1792. To frighten the population into
    complete submission Portuguese authorities
ordered his body to be cut into pieces and to be
displayed along posts in city boulevards.
  • Tiradentes martyrdom made him a national hero.
Thirty years after his death the king designate
by Portugal declared Brazil's independence and
became its first emperor. April 21 is a national
    holiday.

The Monuments Location
  • The Monument of Tiradentes was built in 1962 to
honor this great martyr of Brazilian history. It
is located in the Southeast of Brazil, in the
state of Minas Gerais, in the city of Ouro Preto,
on the Praça de Tiradentes. Tiradentes square
is located on the center of Ouro Preto and
recevied this name because that was where
Tiradentes head was exposed, when it came from
Rio de Janeiro. It separates the old and the new
    part of the city.

4
Math Problem
  • The monument of Tiradentes is too expensive to be
restored every year. This year the mayor decided
to put a fence around it to avoid vandalism. The
fence should be circumscribed about the squared
base monument. Grass will be placed between the
    fence and the monument.
  • Estimate how much fencing and grass will be
needed, knowing that there is a 10 loss in both
    cases.
