Who are we?

• We are the student chapter of the American
  Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP), the
  Texas Society of Health System Pharmacists
  (TSHP), and the Gulf Coast Society of Health
  System Pharmacists (GCSHP)
• In 2006-07, we had 143 members
• Meetings on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month
  on Main Campus

What do we represent?

• We represent areas outside the traditional
  pharmacy
• roles found in the retail environment.
• These areas include
• Clinical specialists
• Inpatient and outpatient care practitioners
• Ex Pharmacists in ambulatory chronic care
  settings such as diabetes and lipids clinics
• Directors of Pharmacy, Hospital Administration
• Home infusion
• Academia
• And other settings associated with a hospital or
  health-system pharmacy

Advancing Knowledge

• Through our meetings with speakers from different
  areas of health-system pharmacy
• Clinical specialists in cardiology, oncology,
  infectious disease, critical care, etc.
• Pharmacy management and industry
• Through Journal Club on TMC campus
• Opportunity to evaluate and present
• literature to peers
• Through hospital tours
• Last year we toured MD Anderson Cancer Center and
  Huntsville Prison Pharmacy facilities

Advancing Clinical Skills

• Through Clinical Skills Competitions
• Teams work in pairs to evaluate a patients case
  and recommend appropriate medication therapy
• Annual UH competition and Annual TSHP competition
• One team represents UH at ASHP Midyear Clinical
  Meeting
• Through Disease State Management Competitions
• Individual competition where students counsel
  patients on their disease state
• Annual TSHP competition

Advancing Professionalism

• Through the Fall Seminar
• Held jointly by UH and TSU to enhance your skills
  in CV writing, interviewing techniques, etc.
• Through the Residency Showcase and Mentoring
  Social
• Residency Showcase invites all residents from TMC
  to meet students
• Residency Social is another opportunity to sit
  down and talk with residents and directors
• Through Continuing Education (CE)
• GCSHP Dinners
• ASHP Publications
• Through Professional meetings
• TSHP Annual Seminar
• ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting

P1 Leadership Opportunities

• First year liaison
• Serves as communication link between P1 class and
  SSHP, also helps out with food and miscellaneous
  for meetings
• Interested? Prepare a brief speech for the
  September 17th meeting where we will vote.
• ASHP Advisory Groups- P1 Positions
• Each of the five Advisory Groups has a position
  for a P1 student

How to join SSHP

• Dues are 70 for the school year
• This includes ASHP, TSHP, GCSHP, SSHP
  memberships
• Also includes a free monthly journal, the
  American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy
  (AJHP), the premier journal in clinical pharmacy
• Lunch is provided at each meeting
