- Fraternities exist as a proven support network
for your student as he embarks on this new period
in his life. Over 400,000 students across the
country are currently fraternity members. The
fraternity can help personalize your student's
college experience by offering a scholastic
support system hands-on experience in leading
committees, managing budgets, and interacting
with faculty and administrators exposure to
potential careers through educational programs
and discussions with alumni the chance to give
back the community through service projects and
close friends who will cheer him on when he is
successful and support him when times are tough.
The all-IFC GPA has consistently been higher than
the all-male GPA at Tulane. Some of the main
values of these organizations are brotherhood,
leadership, community service, social events,
athletics.
7National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
- Alpha Kappa Alpha
- Alpha Phi Alpha
- Delta Sigma Theta
- Kappa Alpha Psi
- Phi Beta Sigma
- Zeta Phi Beta
The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated
(NPHC) at Tulane is currently composed of six of
the nine NPHC Greek letter Sororities and
Fraternities. The stated purpose and mission of
the organization in 1930 was Unanimity of
thought and action as far as possible in the
conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities
and sororities, and to consider problems of
mutual interest to its member organizations.
These organizations were historically founded as
African American fraternities and sororities.
Some of their main values of these groups are
brotherhood/sisterhood, philanthropy service,
advocacy and community relations, and affiliation
with the programs of the graduate chapters.
8Panhellenic Council (NPC or PHC)
Alpha Epsilon Phi Chi Omega Kappa Alpha
Theta Kappa Kappa Gamma Pi Beta Phi Sigma Delta
Tau
Tulane boasts six member sororities from the
National Panhellenic Conference. Panhellenic
values include sisterhood, scholarship,
leadership, and philanthropy. The Tulane
sororities also enjoy formal dances, date
parties, and mixers. The all Panhellenic GPA is
consistently above the Tulane all-Womens GPA and
all-Student GPA. For the fall of 2007, all six
Panhellenic sororities achieved a chapter GPA of
higher than a 3.3!
9The Office of Fraternity Sorority Programs
(OFSP)
- The Office of Fraternity Sorority Programs
encourages the Greek community to become an
integral part of the institution. The growth and
development of the Greek community is contingent
on its joint cooperation and continued
relationship with Tulanes students, staff,
faculty, and the New Orleans community. - In recognition of the significant intellectual,
cultural, and interpersonal opportunities that
Greek organizations provide, The Office of
Fraternity Sorority Programs is committed to
fostering a positive co curricular experience for
students who choose to affiliate with a Greek
organization. Through its various programs,
Office of Fraternity Sorority Programs is
committed to supporting the valuable learning
experience that the Greek community offers. - Our office offers all councils, recognized
fraternities and sororities advising in all areas
of Greek life, leadership programs, assistance
with risk management, we even give students blue
books for tests! The Office publishes a quarterly
newsletter (copies available on our website),
accompanies councils to leadership conferences,
and supervises recruitment for all groups. The
office serves as an advocate for these student
groups to the rest of the Tulane and New Orleans
community and serves as a liaison to each
organization's inter/national headquarters. - Please do not hesitate to contact the office as
needed - Our main e-mail Address gogreek_at_tulane.edu,

10Most parents families have specific questions
and concerns surrounding Greek Life Wed like to
answer them. If we dont answer them here, feel
free to send us your question during this webinar
presentation and we will answer it at the end,
time permitting.
- Common questions
- What is a recognized vs. unrecognized Greek
organization? - I want my student to get involved in leadership
positions. Will he/she have time to do other
things beyond Greek Life? - Will my students grades be affected by joining?
- How much does it cost to join? What is included
in this price? - What is hazing? Will my student be hazed as part
of membership? - Where can I go to learn more?
11Recognized vs. Unrecognized
- At Tulane, we proudly recognize our 24
fraternities and sororities they work closely
with the Office of Fraternity Sorority programs
and are held to a high set of standards. - However, a few additional organizations may exist
as underground fraternities, although because
they do not report to or affiliate with the
Office of Fraternity Sorority Programs, there
is much uncertainty as to their current status in
terms of membership, behavior/conduct, and
organization. They are prohibited from
affiliating with Tulane University but they do
recruit Tulane students as members. - The organizations that the University does not
recognize but believe may recruit new students as
members are Delta Kappa Epsilon, Omega Psi Phi,
Pi Kappa Alpha, and Zeta Psi. - The University discourages students from joining
a fraternity that the university does not
recognize. Unrecognized fraternities are not held
to the University or Interfraternity Council
standards that govern their behavior. They
operate without the oversight, training and
education provided by staff in the Office of
Fraternity and Sorority Programs. - It is crucial that as parents, families, and
friends guide new students into college extra
curricular activities, that they describe the
importance of joining a fraternity that is part
of the greater Greek community, that they with
with the University and not against it.

- All Greek organizations support their own service

and Greek community service events. - Each sorority fraternity has a national
philanthropy or charity that they support.
Chapters at Tulane have raised hundreds of
thousands of dollars each year for their
philanthropies.
14Scholarship
- Often people assume that Greek Life interferes
with academic and scholarly pursuits, however,
scholarship is an important facet of Greek life. - Greeks promote scholastic achievement through
programs like - study groups
- mentors
- study hours
- recognizing high grades
- Order of Omega
- Scholarship opportunities
- Its no wonder that for the past 22 consecutive
semesters, the all Greek GPA has been higher than
the all-student GPA at Tulane!!
15Costs to Join
- The costs of joining a Greek organization vary
substantially between groups and councils. Here
is a rough estimate of the cost of membership - IFC Groups 350-2000 per semester
- Varies based on whether the group has a chapter
house, meal plan, new member or active, etc. - NPHC Groups 200-1000 per year
- Varies based on how many years youve been in the
organization - Panhellenic Groups 600-700 per semester
- Varies based on organization and how long youve
been in the organization - Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority 150 per
semester - All dues cover programs, insurance fees, and
national benefits. Some also include a meal plan,
social events, transportation to events,
t-shirts, a chapter house, and more!
16Hazing
- Defined as Any action taken or situation created,
intentionally, whether on or off fraternity or
sorority premises, to produce mental or physical
discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or
ridicule. - Both Tulane University and all of our
organizations have a strict no tolerance policy
for this behavior.
