The Rubric and You ?

  • A hero is someone who has distinguished courage
or ability and is admired for his brave deeds and
noble qualities. Some people think heroes are
rare and are the ones that get famous on the
news. But I think everyday heroes are just as
important. I believe my high school basketball
coach is a hero because he teaches severely
disabled students, always shows that he cares
about our lives, and he sets a good example.
  • Although many people argue that not everyone is
capable of living the American Dream, I believe
that anyone who pursues their dream can achieve
it as long as they have the courage to overcome
the obstacles they will inevitably face.
  • Superior writing is beneficial to a Medical
Examiner because they must be able to report
    their findings clearly, effectively, and
    understandably.

Content
  • No pass
  • When one person who gets lost in a sea of
prejudice, it only takes one really annoying
person to show them who they really are and where
they came from, no matter how hard they have to
    show it.
  • Writing in the field of court reporters has will
always be in a persons work space or career.
  • Good writing skills are not only good in school
but also its good in the search to get a good
    job.

Meaningfully Incorporating the Portfolio Rubric
  • By meaningfully incorporating the portfolio
rubric in our classes, we might accomplish the
    following objectives

13
  • How the rubric can help meet these objectives
  • Here are some ways one might consider
incorporating the rubric in his/her classes.
Please feel free to add to the list!
  • Share and discuss the portfolio rubric with
students at least prior to the due date(s).
  • Have students submit all essays as portfolios
    throughout the semester.
  • Supplement your own rubric with the portfolio
    rubric (see attached handout A.1).

14
Some more ideas
  • Use rubric to discuss and evaluate model
    paragraphs/essays.
  • Use rubric in peer response, either in designing
feedback handouts for students to use or in
having students determine areas they would like
feedback on (see attached handout B.1 and B.2).
  • Use rubric for reflection and goal-setting (see
    attached handout C.1 and C.2).
  •  When introducing new concepts or revisiting
previously-taught concepts, use the language of
the rubric to reinforce course objectives and
    outcomes.
  • Other ideas for incorporating the portfolio
    rubric in our classes?

Before the Portfolio Read
  • Please visit the website to revisit the common
    reflective letter prompts (Assessment Plan).
  • Instructors will be the first read for their own
classes. Be sure to print out a class set of
    rubrics for that read.
  • Once completed, fold rubric in half and place in
the very back of the right-hand side of the
    folder.
  • Please provide a copy of the showcase essay
    prompt in each portfolio.

17
Reading Portfolios for 12-12-08
  • Guidelines
  • _at_ 80 should be weighted for the showcase
essay. If essay is clearly passing, pass the
    portfolio and move on.
  • _at_ 20 should be weighted for the supplementals
    letter, drafts, etc.
