Title: States

1
States And DATES
2
STATES
You will only abbreviate a state when it appears
with a city. Even then, you only abbreviate
states with 7 letters
3
This means you will NEVER abbreviate Alaska,
Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas Utah
Do NOT use postal service abbreviations. Use the
traditional abbreviations. (Ariz., Calif., etc.)
a complete list is in your stylebook.
4
Remember, you never abbreviate the state unless
it appears with a city. I.e. It happened in
Tucson, Ariz. But I live in Arizona.
5
The Exceptions
Since you are in Arizona, you dont need to use
Ariz. with Arizona cities. Big cities dont
need states (I.e. Los Angeles, New York,
Chicago.) A complete list is in your stylebook.
6
DATES
Never use anything but numerals. (I.e. no 1st,
2nd, 23rd, should be 1, 2, 23, etc). When an
actual day appears in a date (Dec. 7), you must
abbreviate the month if that month has 6 or more
letters. If there is no day, spell out the month
no matter what.
7
DATES
Examples Christmas is in December. St. Patricks
Day is in March. Christmas is Dec. 25. St.
Patricks Day is March 17.
8
Final notes
ONLY use the date if it is more than a week
away. Otherwise, use the day of the week its on
(I.e. Monday). You will NEVER use both the day of
the week and the date. (Do NOT say Monday, March
27. Say Monday OR March 27.)
9
DATES
The short list of months you can abbreviate
January (Jan.), February (Feb.), August (Aug.),
September (Sept.), October (Oct.), November
(Nov.), December (Dec.) NEVER abbreviate March,
