COMMUNICATION

• Communication is a fragile thing. For something
  that is so basic, and such an ingrained part of
  our lives, it should be hearty and resilient.
  But it is easy to break and damage and
  surprisingly very few people know how to do it
  well.

• God gets involved in human communication on a
  global scale twice in the Bible
• At Babel, God counteracts the efforts of the
  people to become equal with God by creating
  languages
• This shows without God, communication is chaotic
  and confusing.

• At Pentecost, God steps back into human
  communication and brings clarity. Every person
  could hear in their own language.
• There are three elements to communication
• Listening
• Expressing
• Maintenance.

LISTENINGActively Participate

• ONE THING AT A TIME
• To show a person that you truly respect them,
  give them your undivided attention.
• If you cant do that, have the courtesy to say so
  and schedule a time you can be uninterrupted and
  undistracted

• EYE CONTACT
• Poor eye contact can be tied to self esteem
• It could be due to media/entertainment
• It could be due to lust
• Good eye contact shows you are focused on the
  other person.

• WAIT YOUR TURN
• While the other person talks, they should be the
  most important thing. Make sure your response is
  appropriate and helpful.

• Make sure you have picked up on denotation and
  connotation of the words
• Are there hidden meanings to the words?

• 90 of communication effectiveness is generated
  from nonverbal cues.
• 60 of all communication is from something other
  than speaking

• HIDE TRUE FEELINGS
• Sarcastic people never have to be vulnerable
• They also make the other person feel smaller
• Sarcastic response keep you from having to say
  it and it makes the other person feel dumb for
  wanting you to.

• CRUEL WITHOUT REPURCUSSIONS
• You can say what you mean without negative
  responses
• The sarcastic person says what they mean, while
  everyone else is in the dark about it.

• BE LOVING
• When unconditional love is present, you put other
  first
• Love is one thing that actually can deal with the
  uncomfortable issues in relationships.

• BE HONEST
• Most people deal in shades of honesty
• Both sugar coating and being too brutal are
  damaging to a relationship

• BE TIMELY
• Not dealing with a problem for days allows anger,
  resentment, and disappointment to move in.
• Cooling off periods are often useful - just dont
  let it drag
• If you seize the wrong time to discuss something,
  it may do more damage than good.

• BE SENSITIVE
• Fight fair
• Be sensitive in your language and approach
• Be aware of how your words are being received.

• LISTENING
• Allow the Holy Spirit to interact with you
• EXPRESSING
• Be honest with God
• He knows your heart anyway
• MAINTENANCE
• Apology and confession
• True repentance
