2Parents and Schools Working Together
Project Background In recognizing that parents
are a childs first teacher, a graduate student
from Our Lady of the Lake Universitys education
program, wanted to involve the parents of her
preschool children in the education of their
children outside of the home setting. The desire
was to create a working partnership between
school and home. Through a collaboration between
her professor and the school, a series of
interactive workshops for parents and their
children were created and delivered during the
2001-2002 school year.
3 This workshop was designed as a cooperative
effort between the Jose Cárdenas Early Childhood
Center of the Edgewood Independent School
District in San Antonio, Texas and education
faculty of Our Lady of the Lake University.
Student volunteers from the OLLU Education Club
attended the workshop to support the families and
to learn how to create partnerships with parents
in the educational process of young children.
4 The focus of the workshop was on creating
wonderful structures from recyclable junk.
Parents and grandparents gathered with their
children and designed large buildings from boxes
and other treasures. Side by side, parents and
children planned, designed, and created their
structures over a period of more than an hour.
Children experientially learned about gravity,
weight and balance through the building process.
The following slides show the families and their
works in progress. The project is supported
in part by the CoMeT Grant.
