2What is Addiction?
- The state of being enslaved to a habit or
practice - Something that forms a psychological or physical
habit under the influence of narcotics or
something that causes trauma
3What Could Someone be Addicted to?

- Anything that someone does compulsively or
uncontrollably - Often it is harmful too your health
5Cigarettes
- Nicotine is the main cause of the addiction
- It sends a message to the brain that it likes
nicotine and must have it - Symptoms include headache, vomiting and diarrhea

7Alcoholism
- Most common addiction in the world
- Hereditary in some cases
- When it is hereditary certain persons can obtain
much more than the average

8Cocaine
- Very addictive stimulant drug
- Can be snorted or injected
- Crack cocaine gets its name from a crackling
sound when its heated - Nervous system stimulant
9Marijuana
- Rapidly passes from lungs to bloodstream
- The good feeling or high makes the user become
addicted - Most used illegal drug
10Heroin
- Drug is injected
- Form of morphine
- Made from Asian poppy plant

- Young people steal from older adults, usually
parents - Think that its harmless just because it comes
from a doctor

- Disorders are diagnosed and are treated
- Addictions are brought on by an uncontrollable
urge or craving - Over eating
- Addiction to eating less and less

- Pushes people to take action in response to
something - Dr. Kalivas is trying to make a drug that
eliminates glutamate
