Pharmacists educational offerings on influenza
Provide a series of educational tools to the
pharmacist to assist in their continuing
education as well as the education of trainees
and the general population regarding both
seasonal and pandemic influenza
ABSTRACT
The Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists
(SIDP) is a dynamic association of pharmacists
and other health professionals dedicated to
promoting education, advocacy, and leadership in
all aspects of infectious diseases. SIDP joins
other organizations in recognizing the existing
and potential morbidity, mortality, and economic
impact that seasonal influenza has and that
pandemic influenza could have on our society. We
feel that pharmacists are uniquely positioned to
provide essential services to assist with the
education and provision of care to the public,
especially among an ambulatory population. In an
effort to re-familiarize pharmacists with disease
state information, practice guidelines, and
physical assessment skills necessary to manage
seasonal and pandemic influenza outbreaks, the
SIDP is launching a multifaceted educational
initiative on influenza management. This
initiative will include practice-development
tools, educational modules for students and
postgraduate pharmacists, and educational
information for patients. Examples of
practice-development and educational tools could
include on-line material (such as lectures and
pod casts), interactive cases, and links to
web-based resources. Practice assessment tools
will be developed to help the pharmacy clinician
identify knowledge deficits and track progress as
they work through educational material. With
respect to patient-focused materials, disease
state brochures and patient-focused slide decks
will be developed to assist practitioners in
providing influenza-related education in their
communities. SIDP is committed to the education
of pharmacists and other healthcare practitioners
so they may effectively meet the practice
challenges presented by seasonal and pandemic
influenza outbreaks.
