Title: Basic Principles

1
Basic Principles
  • Shizuka Tetsuhito
  • Kansai University

2
An English class and a tennis lesson
  • Reading English
  • reading what someone else wrote
  • Listening to English
  • listening to what someone else says
  • An English class where students only read and/or
    listen
  • A tennis school where trainees are only
allowed to watch someone else play

Who cares to sign up for such a school?!
3
Class Effectiveness Test (1)
  • On an average, how many minutes out of 50 of one
class session is each student USING English?
  • A. At least 30 minutes
  • B. About 10 minutes
  • C. 1-2 minutes
  • D. Less than 1

4
Class Effectiveness Test (2)
  • Your students have the translation of the class
materials to be covered today, as well as all the
answer keys to the comprehension questions.
    Would you welcome the situation?
  • A. No way!! What idiot gave them away?.

FAQ
  • Q I want to create suspense so that students can
experience figuring out the meanings by
    themselves.
  • A If they want to, they can do so without being
forced by the teacher. Reading five times more
with the translation at hand would boost their
abilities much more efficiently. With the
enhanced ability, they can enjoy reading
materials of their choice, in their free time.
There is no point in imposing suspense on
someone who can only read at a snails pace.

Yaku-Sakiwatashi Is Half-Baked
  • ??????-Sakiwatashi is even better!
  • Grammatical knowledge can better be acquired
    through books at home
  • Translation had better be checked in advance at
    home
  • Class time had best be spent for training their
skills to USE the target language
  • Let us use the class time for activities that
cannot be done effectively at home

9
Let them play tennis
  • Try to talk as little as possible ABOUT English
    in class.
  • Try to let your students actually USE English as
    much as possible in class.
  • Do not finish your class at a point where your
students have comprehended the content of the
    materials.

Class Effectiveness Test (3)
  • During the chorus reading phase, what are you
doing when the students are reading aloud?
  • A. I am looking at my own textbook.
  • B. I am watching students mouths and
listening to their pronunciation. If I spot a
problem, I stop and coach them in pronunciation.

12
Teaching Principles
  • I will teach in such a way that
  • students will be using English most of the time
  • pre-distributed Japanese translation will not
    constitute a problem and
  • students performances - pronunciation in
particular - before and after the class differ.

13
Activities
  • Monolingual Quiz
  • Read-and-look-up QA
  • J-E word finding contest
  • Chunk repetition
  • Expanding-chunk repetition
  • EIYOW
  • Listen and give the last word/chunk

14
EIYOW
  • Expressing It in Your Own Words
  • Paraphrasing

Example 1
Rachel Carson was a scientist who wrote about the
danger of farm chemicals.
Rachel Carson was a scientist. She was worried
about chemicals used in farms. They were used to
kill insects. Carson thought they were dangerous,
and she wrote a book about it.
16
Example 2
In 1962 she finished her book Silent Spring.
Silent spring means a spring without life.
In 1962, her book Silent Spring came out. She
wrote about spring after all the birds and
insects are gone. The spring is silent because
no birds sing and no insects make noises.

Example 3
  • The Internet is a global computer network
which enables you to communicate with people all
    over the globe.
  • Computers all over the world are connected to
each other. That is the Internet. If you use
the Internet, you can exchange ideas and
information with people in the world.
