- It is in the best interest of Community Colleges
of Spokane and the students we serve to provide
an optimal initial learning period and
orientation opportunity for new employees. - Probationary periods allow the employer to
evaluate an employees skills and abilities, as
well as future potential. - Flexibility in the length of probationary and
trial service periods allows for the ability to
accommodate circumstances and provide mentoring
and training for the new employee so he/she can
meet the performance expectations of the job.
3Probationary and Trial Service Periods
Definitions Probationary Period period of
initial employment for an employee new to CCS.
Employees are considered at will during this
period. Trial Service Period period of initial
employment for an employee who has attained
permanent status in a former position and who has
promoted, transferred or demoted to a position in
which they have not previously held permanent
status. Job Description Assigned duties,
responsibilities, competencies, working
conditions, minimum requirements and specific
information for any CCS position. Non-represented
Classified Staff Classified employees not
covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

probationary status served by new academic
employees as required under RCW 28B.50 At-will
status of an employee not covered by due process
statute. An employer can dismiss an at-will
employee at any time for any reason not contrary
to public policy.

- Responsibilities
- Managers/supervisors responsible for providing
adequate orientation and training, and evaluating
the employee during the probationary/trial
period. - Employees responsible for meeting and exceeding
job requirements and performing at the highest
competency level possible both during the
probationary period as well as throughout their
employment.

Probationary Periods by Employment Category
Executive, administrator and exempt employees
serve the probationary period outlined in their
individual employment contracts. Tenure Track
Academic Employees serve a tenure review period
outlined in the Master Contract, typically 7
academic quarters of review.

(continued) - Classified Employees serve the probationary
period described in their respective job
description. This period can be extended up to
12 total months. - During the probationary period, CCS may
- terminate employment for any
- non-discriminatory reason.
- All other employees are at-will except as
- modified in the individuals employment
- contract.
8Probationary and Trial Service Periods
- Trial Service Periods for Classified Employees
- Classified employees who move into a position
for which they have not previously attained
permanent status, will serve a trial service
period as outlined in that job description. This
period can be extended for up to 12 months. - Employees who do not successfully complete a
trial service period - May be offered the opportunity to revert to
another vacant position for which they are
qualified. - May be placed on a layoff list for any position
in which they have previously attained permanent
status. - Non-represented staff may also have the right to
revert to their former position within 30 days.

- Extension of the Probationary/Trial Service
Period - Employees serving a probationary or trial service
period - will be evaluated on conduct, capacity,
efficiency, skill, - responsibility, integrity effectiveness
relative to the job. - Human Resources will provide evaluation forms.
- The appropriate supervisor/evaluator may request
an extension of the probationary or trial
service - For an academic employee, at the recommendation
of the tenure track committee, extensions up to
three additional academic quarters if approved by
the Board. - For classified staff, a supervisor may extend the
trial service period up to 6 months, but not to
exceed 12 total months.

- Probationary and Trial Service Periods are the
optimal time for orientation and training of new
employees. - Employers can evaluate the match between employee
and the position and recommend ways the employee
can be successful. - Probationary periods are at-will.
- Probationary periods for differing types of
employees are outlined in faculty and staff union
agreements and employment contracts. - For faculty, extensions up to three academic
quarters are allowed. - For staff, extensions are allowed up to a total
probationary period of 12 months.
