Title: 2 Samuel 22
12 Samuel 22
22 Samuel 22A Song or a Psalm
3A Song or a Psalm?
- (2 Sam 221 NKJV) Then David spoke to the LORD
the words of this song, on the day when the LORD
had delivered him from the hand of all his
enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
4A Song or a Psalm?
- This song, which is found with scarcely any
material variation as Ps. 18, and with the words
of this first verse for its title, belongs to the
early part of Davids reign when he was recently
established upon the throne of all Israel, and
when his final triumph over the house of Saul,
and over the pagan nations 2Sa_2244-46,
Philistines, Moabites, Syrians, Ammonites, and
Edomites, was still fresh 2 Sam. 21. -- Albert
Barnes
5A Song or a Psalm?
- (2 Sam 221 NKJV) Then David spoke to the LORD
the words of this song, on the day when the LORD
had delivered him from the hand of all his
enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
- (Psa 181 NKJV) I will love You, O LORD, my
strength. - This verse doesnt match well, but there are many
similarities. In the chapter
6They are very smiliar
- (2 Sam 222 NKJV) And he said "The LORD is my
rock and my fortress and my deliverer
- (Psa 182 NKJV) The LORD is my rock and my
fortress and my deliverer My God, my strength,
in whom I will trust My shield and the horn of
my salvation, my stronghold.
7Verses do not match exactly, but many of the
thoughts do match.
- (2 Sam 223 NKJV) The God of my strength, in
whom I will trust My shield and the horn of my
salvation, My stronghold and my refuge My
Savior, You save me from violence.
- (Psa 182 NKJV) The LORD is my rock and my
fortress and my deliverer My God, my strength,
in whom I will trust My shield and the horn of
my salvation, my stronghold.
8What about the Psalms?
- Some of them are in books of the Bible, other
than the Psalms. - One thing that makes them special is Davids
diligence at expressing his profound thankfulness
to God. - He gives so many details of his thanks and his
feelings. - He says things we can identify with
9The God of my strength
- (2 Sam 223 NKJV) The God of my strength, in
whom I will trust My shield and the horn of my
salvation, My stronghold and my refuge My
Savior, You save me from violence.

afraid.
12Comment on 2 Samuel 225
- When the waves of death compassed me Though
in a primary sense many of these things belong to
David, yet generally and fully they belong to the
Messiah alone. -- Adam Clarke
13Jesus said the Psalms spoke of Him
- (Luke 2444 NKJV) Then He said to them, "These
are the words which I spoke to you while I was
still with you, that all things must be fulfilled
which were written in the Law of Moses and the
Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."
14David or Christ?
- (2 Sam 226 NKJV) The sorrows of Sheol
surrounded me The snares of death confronted me.
15To Whom is the Prophet referring?
- (Acts 834 NKJV) So the eunuch answered Philip
and said, "I ask you, of whom does the prophet
say this, of himself or of some other man?"
16David was delivered from his enemies
- (2 Sam 227 NKJV) In my distress I called upon
the LORD, And cried out to my God He heard my
voice from His temple, And my cry entered His
ears.
17Is this Christ or David?
- (2 Sam 228 NKJV) "Then the earth shook and
trembled The foundations of heaven quaked and
were shaken, Because He was angry.
18Is this about Christ?
- (Mat 2751-54 NKJV) Then, behold, the veil of
the temple was torn in two from top to bottom
and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, .
. . 54 So when the centurion and those with
him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake
and the things that had happened, they feared
greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
19Or is it about David?
- Then the earth shook and trembled - In this
and the following verses David describes, by the
sublimest expressions and grandest terms, the
majesty of God, and the awful manner in which he
came to his assistance. The representation of the
storm in these verses must be allowed by all
skillful and impartial judges to be truly sublime
and noble, and in the genuine spirit of poetry.
-- Adam Clarke

nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth

and came down With darkness under His feet. - (Mat 2745 NKJV) Now from the sixth hour until
the ninth hour there was darkness over all the
land.
22Is the Simply Poetic Beauty
- (2 Sam 2211 NKJV) He rode upon a cherub, and
flew And He was seen upon the wings of the wind.
23Is this from Sinai?
- (2 Sam 2212 NKJV) He made darkness canopies
around Him, Dark waters and thick clouds of the
skies. - (Exo 2020-21 NKJV) And Moses said to the
people, "Do not fear for God has come to test
you, and that His fear may be before you, so that
you may not sin." 21 So the people stood afar
off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where
God was.

third day, in the morning, that there were
thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on
the mountain and the sound of the trumpet was
very loud, so that all the people who were in the
camp trembled.
26Figurative Language
- (2 Sam 2215 NKJV) He sent out arrows and
scattered them Lightning bolts, and He
vanquished them.
27Albert Barnes
- And discomfited them - literally, to impel, to
drive then, to put in commotion or
consternation. The allusion is to an army whose
order is disturbed, or which is thrown into
confusion, and which is, therefore, easily
conquered. The idea is that David achieved a
victory over all his enemies, as if God had
scattered them by a storm and tempest.
28Gods complete Control
- (2 Sam 2216 NKJV) Then the channels of the sea
were seen, The foundations of the world were
uncovered, At the rebuke of the LORD, At the
blast of the breath of His nostrils. - The tempest of the air is attended by appropriate
results on earth. The language, though not
expressive of any special physical changes,
represents the utter subversion of the order of
nature. Before such a God none can stand.
Jamieson, Faussett, Brown
29Do waters trouble?
- (2 Sam 2217 NKJV) "He sent from above, He took
me, He drew me out of many waters. - The meaning here is, that God had rescued him out
of the many troubles and dangers that encompassed
him, as if he had fallen into the sea and was in
danger of perishing. Albert Barnes
30Thanks for His Deliverance!
- (2 Sam 2218 NKJV) He delivered me from my
strong enemy, From those who hated me For they
were too strong for me.

of my calamity, But the LORD was my support.
32More Appreciation

broad place He delivered me because He delighted
in me.

word of God.

- (2 Sam 2224 NKJV) I was also blameless before
Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity. - Maybe the meaning
- (2 Sam 2224 NIV) I have been blameless before
him and have kept myself from sin.
37God Does Reward Righteousness in some cases.
- (2 Sam 2225 NKJV) Therefore the LORD has
recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to my cleanness in His eyes.
38The way we would hope
- (2 Sam 2226 NKJV) "With the merciful You will
show Yourself merciful With a blameless man You
will show Yourself blameless
39Reflect on This
- (Exo 346-7 NKJV) And the LORD passed before him
and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful
and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in
goodness and truth, 7 "keeping mercy for
thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression
and sin, by no means clearing the guilty,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children and the children's children to the third
and the fourth generation."
40Reaping what you sow.
- (2 Sam 2227 NKJV) With the pure You will show
Yourself pure And with the devious You will show
Yourself shrewd. - For comparison
- (Psa 1826 NCV) You are pure to those who are
pure, but you are against those who are bad.
41Dont be Proud
- (2 Sam 2228 NKJV) You will save the humble
people But Your eyes are on the haughty, that
You may bring them down. - A New Testament concept as well
- (James 46 NKJV) But He gives more grace.
Therefore He says "God resists the proud, But
gives grace to the humble."

feet of deer, And sets me on my high places.
48He has given me military victory
- (2 Sam 2235 NKJV) He teaches my hands to make
war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
49Gentleness has made me great.
- (2 Sam 2236 NKJV) "You have also given me the
shield of Your salvation Your gentleness has
made me great.
50You keep me safe
- (2 Sam 2237 NKJV) You enlarged my path under
me So my feet did not slip.
51Thankful for Victory
- (2 Sam 2238 NKJV) "I have pursued my enemies
and destroyed them Neither did I turn back again
till they were destroyed. - He had the nobility not to kill Saul

wounded them, So that they could not rise They

their hideouts.

- (2 Sam 2247 NKJV) "The LORD lives! Blessed be
my Rock! Let God be exalted, The Rock of my
salvation!
60God takes vengeance!
- (2 Sam 2248 NKJV) It is God who avenges me, And
subdues the peoples under me - (Heb 1030 NKJV) For we know Him who said,
"Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.
And again, "The LORD will judge His people."
61God takes vengeance!
- (2 Sam 2249 NKJV) He delivers me from my
enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise
against me You have delivered me from the
violent man.

to You, O LORD, among the Gentiles, And sing
praises to Your name.
