Title: Spiritual Gifts

1
Spiritual Gifts
  • Spiritual Gifts in the Book of Romans- Part 1

2
The Big Picture- Salvation/Justification
  • How does the relationship between Jews Gentile
    affect spiritual gifts?
  • Are Gentiles in the New Testament saved by a
different means than the Jews in the Old?
  • Chapter 1- Gentiles are condemned and under the
    wrath of God (Romans 120)
  • Gentiles can understand there is a God but they
make a conscious choice not to worship God but to
    worship His creation instead

3
The Big Picture- Salvation/Justification
  • Chapter 2- Jews are guiltier than Gentiles
because God has revealed Himself much more fully
in the Law of Moses (Romans 212-13)
  • Both Gentiles and Jews are equal in terms of
    condemnation
  • Chapter 3- What good is having the Law then?
  • We are not only helpless in our sin we are
    hopeless (Romans 321-22)

4
The Big Picture- Salvation/Justification
  • Chapter 4- Werent people in the OT saved by
    keeping the Law of God?
  • Abraham was saved because he believed what God
    said (Genesis 156/Romans 43)
  • Chapter 5- So what is so special about Jesus?
  • Sin came from one person (Adam) and salvation
    comes from One person (Jesus)

5
The Big Picture- Sanctification
  • We are saved by faith alone, but how are we
    sanctified?
  • Galatians 32-3 I would like to learn just one
thing from you Did you receive the Spirit by
observing the law, or by believing what you
heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with
the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your
    goal by human effort?
  • Chapter 6- We can not live the same we did before
    salvation (Romans 63,4)

6
The Big Picture- Sanctification
  • Chapter 7- So how can we live a new life?
  • Paul gives the example of marriage
  • The second is that law keeping does not work
  • Chapter 8- The answer to the problem is the Holy
    Spirit (Romans 811)
  • The Holy Spirit is at work in the life of the
    believer

7
The Big Picture- Dispensations
  • Chapters 9 , 10, and 11 are NOT a parenthesis
  • Chapter 9- What went wrong for Israel not to
believe in Jesus as the Messiah? (Romans 96,7)
  • Chapter 10- People still have a decision to make
  • Gentiles are being saved because they trusted in
Jesus by faith and Jews who are working to keep
the law can not keep the Law
  • Chapter 11- So is it all over for Israel?
  • Jewish hardening is only partial only temporary

8
The Big Picture- Application
  • Chapter 12- The first application regarding our
salvation is the exercise of spiritual gifts
  • Chapter 13- Godly living in an ungodly world
  • Chapter 14 to 15 12- All about the relationship
    strong and the weak believers
  • Spiritual gifts are strengths that allow us to
minister to those who are weak
  • Chapter 16- Personal encouragement and greetings
    to individuals

9
Spiritual Gifts in the Book of Romans
  • Spiritual gifts must be a topic for believers
since they come after the chapters on salvation
  • Spiritual gifts come after the chapters on
sanctification, so they are not natural abilities
  • Spiritual gifts come after the dispensational
chapter 9-11, so gifts deal with getting us to
    minister to other people
  • Spiritual gifts are about relationships with
other people in the Body of Christ

10
Concluding Thoughts
  • Spiritual gifts are all about God (Chapter 1-11)
  • Spiritual gifts are about people (Chapter 12-16)
  • Spiritual gifts are entirely different than how
the secular world thinks or acts

11
To God Be the Glory
  • To God be the glory great things He hath done!
  • So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
  • Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
  • And opened the life gate that all may go in

12
  • CHORUS
  • Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  • Let the earth hear His voice!
  • Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  • Let the people rejoice!
  • O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
  • And give Him the glory great things He hath
    done!

13
  • O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
  • To every believer the promise of God
  • The vilest offender who truly believes,
  • That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

14
  • CHORUS
  • Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  • Let the earth hear His voice!
  • Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  • Let the people rejoice!
  • O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
  • And give Him the glory great things He hath
    done!

15
  • Great things He hath taught us,
  • great things He hath done,
  • And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son
  • But purer, and higher, and greater will be
  • Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

16
  • CHORUS
  • Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  • Let the earth hear His voice!
  • Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  • Let the people rejoice!
  • O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
  • And give Him the glory great things He hath
    done!
