Title: Many PathsOne Journey
1Many PathsOne Journey
- Capuchins of Central Canada
2The Capuchin Family
- Founded in 1528 by Fr. Matthew of Bascio in Italy
to renew the vigor of religious life rooted in
poverty and service to others. - With over 11 000 Friars around the world in 102
countries, Friars look to a two fold life of
prayer and apostolic activity.
380 Years of Service in Canada
- In 1927, Flemish Capuchins brought the Franciscan
vision to Canada. Today we imitate the
cosmopolitan character of our country having
members that are English, Irish, French-Canadian,
Italian, Spanish, African, Polish and so on.

9On the Front Lines of Service
- Being a Capuchin, means actively searching for
ways to serve and to help others. - By living amongst and journeying with the
marginalized and impoverished of our communities,
Capuchins understand their needs and worries. - Often, this means answering Gods call in radical
and innovative ways, for every hunger of humanity
is a Friars concern.
10St. Francis Table
- Started in 1987, St. Francis Table sought to
offer a service to the poor and low income
members of our society in a radically different
way. - The restaurant style, offers patrons a nourishing
meal in a manner that recognizes and emphasized
their dignity. - Hungry and fed, stranger and welcomed, thirsty
and living water make a difference at 1322 Queen
Street.
11Ministries in Your Own Backyard
- Parishes Since 1927, our Friars have come from
different parts of the world to minister among
immigrants Flemish, Dutch, Czech, Polish,
Italian, Spanish, and Eritrean families both in
Ontario and Manitoba. - Chaplaincies Friars have answered the call to
serve in hospitals, jails, and in educational
institutions. - Social Justice Ministries You will find Friars
involved in a range of activities ranging from
marching on picket lines to handing out coffee
and sandwiches to street people. A unique
ministry is Poverello Charity, where members of
our society who have been afflicted with mental
illness are invited to live a supportive,
community experience.
12Attending to our Youth and Adult Spiritual Needs
- Mount Alverno provides a relatively quiet area in
the building, as well as a hermitage for
individual retreatants. The beauty of the
picturesque Caledon Hills, the nature paths on
our 102 acres, and the location of Mt. Alverno
away from the city all lend to individuals
enjoying a reflective getaway.
13Two Fold Life Prayer
- Capuchins feel a deep and lasting friendship and
trust in God through frequent, open, and
uninhibited conversation in prayer. - Through community prayer, Friars find strength
and encouragement. - In community prayer, the brothers remember
problems and worries of those in need. - Daily, the Friars gather together to pray the
official prayer of the Church, the Liturgy of the
Hours. - Monthly, the Friars gather for a day of
recollection and yearly, for a common week of
retreat. - Friars are encouraged to leave their work from
time to time and to spend time in individual
reflection.
