Understanding Our Genetic Code

A Human Cell
3
The Cell Nucleus
4
Chromosomes
5
What is a Chromosome?
  • In the nucleus of each cell, the DNA molecule is
    packaged into thread-like structures called
chromosomes. Each chromosome is made up of DNA
tightly coiled many times around proteins called
    histones that support its structure.
  • Chromosomes are not visible in the cells
nucleusnot even under a microscopewhen the cell
is not dividing. However, the DNA that makes up
chromosomes becomes more tightly packed during
cell division and is then visible under a
microscope. Most of what researchers know about
chromosomes was learned by observing chromosomes
    during cell division.

How many chromosomes do people have?
  • In humans, each cell normally contains 23 pairs
of chromosomes, for a total of 46. Twenty-two of
these pairs, called autosomes, look the same in
    both males and females.
  • The 23rd pair, the sex chromosomes, differ
between males and females. Females have two
copies of the X chromosome, while males have one
    X and one Y chromosome.

What is DNA?
  • DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary
material in humans and almost all other
organisms. Nearly every cell in a persons body
has the same DNA. Most DNA is located in the cell
nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a
small amount of DNA can also be found in the
mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial
    DNA or mtDNA).
  • An important property of DNA is that it can
replicate, or make copies of itself. Each strand
of DNA in the double helix can serve as a pattern
for duplicating the sequence of bases. This is
critical when cells divide because each new cell
needs to have an exact copy of the DNA present in
    the old cell.

Bodies Grow As Cells Divide
  • Cells are the structural and functional unit of
all living organisms. The human body has an
    estimated 100,000,000,000,000 cells. Each cell
can independently take in nutrients, convert them
into energy, carry out specialized functions, and
    reproduce as necessary.
  • A sphere about one quarter of an inch in diameter
contains an estimated 1,000,000,000 cells. Each
cell has a different purpose - muscle cells which
make movement possible, nerve cells which allow
sensation, etc. Particular cells are organized
    into functioning structures called organs.
  • Every minute, it is estimated that 10 million of
our human cells divide. This division is referred
    to as mitosis.

Everything is Built on Jesus
  • Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea
Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do
people say that the Son of Man is?" And they
said, "Some say John the Baptist and others,
Elijah but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the
prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say
that I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the
Christ, the Son of the living God."
  • And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon
Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal
this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. "I
also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this
rock I will build My church and the gates of
    Hades will not overpower it.
  • Matt 1613-18 NASU

13
Ephesians 219-22 NASU
  • So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,
but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and
are of God's household, having been built on the
foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ
Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the
whole building, being fitted together, is growing
into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also
are being built together into a dwelling of God
    in the Spirit.

14
1 Corinthians 310-12 NASU
  • According to the grace of God which was given to
me, like a wise master builder I laid a
foundation, and another is building on it.
  • But each man must be careful how he builds on it.
For no man can lay a foundation other than the
one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

15
1. Jesus must be Savior and Lord!
  • "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for
certain that God has made Him both Lord and
    Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified.
  • Acts 236

16
John 316-19 NLT
  • "For God loved the world so much that he gave
his one and only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him will not perish but have eternal
life. God sent his Son into the world not to
judge the world, but to save the world through
    him.
  • "There is no judgment against anyone who believes
in him. But anyone who does not believe in him
has already been judged for not believing in
    God's one and only Son.

17
Isa 534-6 NLT
  • Yet it was our weaknesses he carried it was our
sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought
his troubles were a punishment from God, a
    punishment for his own sins!
  • But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for
our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed. All of
us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left
God's paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid
on him the sins of us all.

18
Jesus Christ is Lord
  • Greek word for Lord is Kurios
  • It means one in absolute authority,
  • complete owner,
  • master,
  • he who has claim to unrestricted obedience

19
Lordship is the end of your life
  • Then he said to all, "Anyone who wants to follow
me must put aside his own desires and
conveniences and carry his cross with him every
day and keep close to me!
  • Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it,
but whoever insists on keeping his life will lose
it and what profit is there in gaining the
whole world when it means forfeiting one's self?
  • Luke 923-25 TLB

20
Romans 121-2
  • Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies
of God, to present your bodies a living and holy
sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your
    spiritual service of worship.
  • And do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that
you may prove what the will of God is, that which
is good and acceptable and perfect.

21
Did You Count the Cost?
  • Luke 1412-35
  • There is no easy payment plan
  • 10 down with monthly payments
  • No interest until death
  • 30 at wedding, 30 with children, balloon
    payment on your deathbed
  • Its your whole life on the table!

22
Peter Said it this way
  • Peter said to them, " Repent, and each of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins and you will receive
the gift of the Holy Spirit. "For the promise is
for you and your children and for all who are far
off, as many as the Lord our God will call to
    Himself.
  • Acts 238

23
Paul tells you how to do it
  • For salvation that comes from trusting
Christ-which is what we preach-is already within
easy reach of each of us in fact, it is as near
as our own hearts and mouths. For if you tell
others with your own mouth that Jesus Christ is
your Lord and believe in your own heart that God
has raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
  • For it is by believing in his heart that a man
becomes right with God and with his mouth he
tells others of his faith, confirming his
    salvation.
  • Romans 108-10 TLB

24
Are you Ready to Serve God?
  • No more excuses
  • No more apologies
  • No more putting it off
  • No more running away
  • No more hiding from Him
  • No more playing games

25
You Can Do it Right now!
  • 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock if anyone
hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in
    to him
  • Jesus-Revelation 320-21
