DC Citizen Corps Preparing Every Citizen
  • Mission
  • The mission of the DC Citizen Corps is to harness
the power of every individual through education,
training and volunteerism to make communities
safer, stronger and better prepared for handling
threats of terrorism, crime, public health risks
and disasters of all kind. Our goal is to develop
programs where DC residents are equipped with
skills in emergency response and preparedness to
    effectively assist their neighbors and
    communities during disasters.
  • DC Citizen Corps Overview
  • The DC Citizen Corps aims to build on the civic
philanthropy of District residents by creating
    opportunities for individuals to volunteer
through one of the DC Citizen Corps disaster
training programs. Citizen Corps is a component
of USA Freedom Corps, an initiative established
by President Bush in January 2002 to inspire
Americans to find ways to serve their
communities. In support of this initiative,
Mayor Anthony A. Williams designated Serve DC
(the DC Commission on National and Community
Service) the coordinator of Citizen Corps for the
    District of Columbia.
  • DC Citizen Corps brings together local leaders,
citizen volunteers, and the network of first
    responder organizations, such as fire
    departments, police departments, and emergency
    medical personnel to increase community
    involvement in emergency preparedness and
    response.

DC Citizen Corps Preparing Every Citizen
  • The need to prepare is REAL!
  • Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives
every year. Each disaster has lasting effects,
    both to people and property.
  • If a disaster occurs in your community, local
    government and disaster-relief organizations will
try to help you, but you need to be ready as
well. Local responders may not be able to reach
you immediately, or they may need to focus their
    efforts elsewhere.
  • You should know how to respond to severe weather
or any disaster that could occur in your area -
    hurricanes, earthquakes, extreme cold, flooding,
    or terrorism.
  • You should also be ready to be self-sufficient
for at least three days. This may mean providing
for your own shelter, first aid, food, water, and
    sanitation.
