    personal needs
  • WS_FTP - the standard software to transfer
    files from one computer
    to another
  • Browser - Netscape and Microsofts Internet
    Explorer are the most
    well known, and Opera is
    also a good one
  • Host Computer - for municipal web sites, the
    Secretary of State has
    provided space. See me

ADD YOUR CONTENT
  • TITLE type in the name of your town
  • ADDRESS type in your address
  • E-Mail type in your full e-mail address
  • insert a divider bar
  • create a table, similar in looks to a spread
    sheet
  • add the tags that let browsers read text as
    graphics

9
TAGS
  • Browsers do not recognize the normal codes that
word processors use carriage returns, tabs,
    empty spaces
  • You have to use special tags that are recognized
    universally by all browsers
  • MOST commands need to put a tag at the beginning
and end of the text that they are controlling
  • SOME tags only need to be placed once, at the
point they will affect the document
  • Use the supporting document for basic tags and
their uses or use the My Bookmarks link at
    htttp//crs.uvm.edu/tocp for more comprehensive
    documents

10
ADD A GRAPHIC
  • Graphics are not physically drawn but are
linked to the location on your page.
  • Graphics files are large by nature, so use them
    sparingly
  • You have to have the graphic file in your
directory, or know the location to tell the
    browser where to find it
  • add the tag ltIMG SCR"grapvine.gif" gt
    ltIMG SRC"grapvine.gif" HEIGHT24 WIDTH525gt
    ltIMG SCRhttp//crs.uvm.edu/tocp/grapevine.gifgt
  • You can grab images as you surf the net by
using your right mouse button to click on an
image, and choosing save as to save it into
your preferred directory or download standard
    ones from download libraries

11
ADD A LINK
  • Links are just directions to another location
  • It can be
  • on the same page
  • to a different page on your site
  • to a different site on another computer
  • The syntax to a location in the same page is
slightly different then to a different page
  • ltA NAME"caledonia"gtlt/Agt
  • this is put in as the target that the linked text
    will take you to
  • ltA HREF"caledonia"gtCaledonialt/Agt
  • this is the tag around the text that you will
click on to take you the the target location
  • ltA HREF"http//crs.uvm.edu/tocp/beginner/index.ht
    m"gt Beginner's Guide to the Internetlt/Agtlt/CENTERgt
  • this is the syntax to use when you want to go to
    location off your site

12
PUBLISHING
  • After you have tested your site on your computer,
you need to send all of the files associated with
it to a host computerThe HOST computer is the
one people will be accessing to get their
    information from, not yours.
  • You will transfer the files to the HOST using a
process called FTP - File Transfer Protocol -
  • Once you transfer the files you are done and the
community can access the information at their
convenience, frrom any location, at any time
